Hundreds of people showed up at Wat That Phanom in That Phanom district of Nakhon Phanom on Tuesday after it was widely rumoured that a resident of the district who reported to have won 60-million baht from ten first-prize lottery tickets for March 16 draw would hand out three million baht worth of his fortune to whoever at the temple.

The prize winner, Mr Thammawat Phraethong, is said to be a native of That Phanom district.

Monks at the temple were caught in surprise with the turnout of hundreds of people – many of them sat patiently waiting on the front yard in front of the temple for the arrival of the “philanthropic” donor.

While I share many of the slightly negative comments above, give a thought to some of the other factors which led to this.   1,000 Baht is a lot of money, especially if you are earning 300 B

I see the usual moronic comments are here. You try being dirt poor, working in a thankless job and walk a mile in their shoes before you start spouting off vapid comments about 'hand-outs' etc.

And then they wonder why elections are being bought so easily.. :giggle:

mabey he was granted an ''extension''.

In the years past, the villagers would receive B300 from a candidate running for office. I’m guessing that the donation has gone up, but not by much.

Everybody wants something for nothing - this is the root cause for corruption!

Free handouts=Fools gold...

Don't those people have any pride? (Rhetorical question)

1,000 Baht is a lot of money, especially if you are earning 300 Baht a day.

Thai Buddhism places a great deal of emphasis on money and temples.

When you have and encourage a culture whereby the rich and powerful dispense "gifts", you can't really blame the poor and powerless for taking them.

Spare a kindness for these people, even if they don't completely deserve it. They are what they were made...

Not even a free lunch?

Obviously, they were duped by false news posted in the social media.

That's social media for you - a game of hit and miss. While they were out they also missed out on meeting african nobles of marriageable age.

You are not making 300 a day, if you waste your time sitting waiting for (never coming) free handouts..:coffee1:

It wouldn't be unusual for people to spent 20 baht on fuel to go and get a free toothbrush worth 10 baht!......It's free!!!

You beat me to it!

Sit for hours, day after day, year after year, doing nothing and then they wonder why they're all poor.

Westerners line up for 1 hour for discounted fuel.

A problem may have arisen whereby this resident has not yet received the prize money because an ex-cop is challenging the win claiming he accidentally dropped the winning tickets on the pavement and this person found them.

Maybe the resident has gone missing. Not wise to tell desperate and poor you have 60m baht.

I wonder how many of the people that showed up at the temple would have made a donation after receiving their windfall?

Like I said in a prior post, all sheep!

Makes me wonder how many of them would show up at a job fair offering positions with a decent salary.

There are many reasons people are poor, economics, opportunities etc. and nothing to do with your lazy-ass thinking conservative 'they are all lazy' shtick.

Don't tell me, you have some anecdote to tell us about the lazy Thais, do us all a favour and don't bother

The police probably showed up early, and then there was nothing left.

I have no intentions of providing an anecdote. Any body who opens their eyes can see tons of the lazy bu**ers sitting around day in, day out.

That would have got a lot of coppers off the streets for a while!

I think your wrong, or at least partly. There are indeed those that are working hard and are still poor but there are plenty that are lazy too. You should just open your eyes. In this country and many others both reasons are valid laziness and economic reasons.

I would think it likely none of those Thais have an old farang sami on their family mango tree.

One would hope that we who were raised in the west in a time of relative plenty and with a comprehensive social security net to catch us if we fell would indeed spare them a kindness. But of course this is Thaivisa...
