Police drop plans to ban tinted windows

No proof to confirm accident, crime links

A lack of strong evidence to link road accidents and crimes to dark car-window tints has put on hold a plan to reintroduce a law to ban tinting.

A 2000 regulation under the Land Traffic Act requiring car-window tints to allow at least 60% of light inside has been abolished after it was postponed several times.

Pol Lt-Col Ritthee Wisetkhamin, chief traffic inspector of Suthisarn police station, said police had no plan to reintroduce it in the absence of evidence linking car-window tinting to accidents or crimes.

Police would have to spend a lot of money on special tint-measuring equipment if the law was to be enforced.

However, police can still arrest owners of cars whose window tints are coated with mercury which reflects light and may cause road accidents.

Paiboon Suriyawongpaisal, a researcher at the Road Safety Knowledge Unit, acknowledged there was no clear evidence supporting the link between tinting and accidents. Although there was an assumption that dark tints on a vehicle's windshield and rear window would impair the driver's vision, there was no clear evidence to support that.

It always seemed to me that people in cars with darkly tinted windows were doing something they shouldn't be doing. Otherwise, why hide?
