The government has paid about $1.2 million to nearly 12,000 female garment workers who have had babies so far this year. According to a report released yesterday by the National Social Security Fund, 11,706 female garment workers delivered babies in January, February and the first 22 days of March.

“So far this year, 11,706 female workers delivered 11,783 babies, with 77 of them having twins,” it said. Cambodia’s garment industry employs about 700,000 workers, most of whom are women.

The report said that the government paid 4.7 billion riel, or about $1.2 million, to the female garment workers who gave birth.

Prime Minister Hun Sen had previously promised that the government would provide a bonus of $100 per worker who delivered one baby, while mothers of twins would receive $200 and mothers of triplets would get $300.
