Police general warns men: ten years jail for groping females at Songkran

Deputy national police chief Wirachai Songmetta has come up with a long list of do's and don't's for this year's Songkran celebration.

If the Thai people follow suit it will make for a safe and enjoyable festival to herald in the traditional Thai New Year.

Top of the don't list was molesting women such as by groping breasts. He said that anyone who does could face up to ten years behind bars or a fine of 200,000 baht or both.

People selling alcohol to minors (under 20s) could see themselves jailed for a year and fined 20,000 baht.

In serious cases drink driving could warrant a jail term of between one and five years and fines between 20,000 and 100,000 baht with suspension or removal of licenses for good.

But it was Pol Gen Wirachai's do's and don't's for road safety that took center stage as the country once again gears up for the inevitable carnage.

Here is his 11 point plan for road users:

  • Don't speed
  • Don't go against the flow of traffic
  • Do wait at red lights
  • Don't drive while sleepy
  • Do wear seat belts
  • Do have a license
  • Don't overtake in congested areas
  • Don't drink and drive
  • Do wear a helmet on a motorcycle
  • Do use motorcycles safely
  • Don't use a phone while driving.

Pol Gen Wirachai had one more message before signing off at police HQ yesterday:

"Have fun at Thai New Year folks!"

For the foreigner who wishes to indulge in the breast stroke, it is better they do it IN some bars than on the street and then find themselves BEHIND bars.

555. these guys are hilarious. who comes up with this. sure, it's sexual assault but 10 years? if they made the punishments realistic people might actually adhere to the law

So this eleven-point plan is only for Songkran.

The rest of the year you can grope, and drink in the back of pick-ups, all to your heart's content.

Normal sort of news article really: how there's going to be a crackdown, but only a short-lived one.

the most dangerous IMO is rubbing powder into the eyes,

and shooting dirt water into the eyes of motorcyclists.

i'm very disappointed if these offenses dont take priority over all other suggestions

Thanks for the warning Herr General, I shall remain at home with her indoors, I will occasionally chuck her in the shower to simulate Songkran, I will also fondle to my hearts content as she does actually like the attention and emerge the other side of the festivities a leaner, cleaner and exhausted GT, thanks for the heads up.

I'd assume they get 100% staff discount.

So if I get a massage and get groped on genitals do they get 10 years and I a free massage? If so I'll have a 5 hour massage thanks.

How much for helping yourself on a bus, if you're not wearing an orange robe?

If breasts are worth 10 years how much for other bits? Could be 40 years for 4 seconds of groping.

Up to ten years, it's not mandatory, it's the maximum.

But it's the fact that the maximum term will never ever be reached.  It's like the 1 year in jail for smoking on a beach.  Never going to happen.

Should this outdated and wasteful celebration of throwing water be finally put to bed?

I can already see it:
- Ex GF has lady friend, claiming that Farang "groped" her. Ex GF is witness to the crime. = Farang goes to jail.

More imminent dangers lurking over the heads of Farangs:
- Having exchanged good hard currency and having received fake 1000 Bht notes in return. = Farang goes to jail.
- Having placed a negative "Restaurant Revue" on social-media. = Farang goes to jail.

I advocate simplification:
Upon arrival in Thailand, as a preventive measure: Farang goes to jail. For every planned Holiday-Week, it's 1 year in jail, before commencing Holiday.
After that, Farang is allowed to commence Holiday. Also allowed to "grope" women, carry fake local currency and post negative Restaurant-Revues.
Cheers.

Even when I appreciate dryer Songkran, I can't even imagine how people can enjoy partying without being a bit mao.

There's a time when I enjoyed to make my rounds in a pick up with people in the back throwing water on others, but of course on those who're doing the same thing for fun.

And of course, will we miss the wet shirts, after red and yellow shirts are gone. :sleepy:

i know mate. i just think if the sentences were more realistic then people might start taking them seriously

Is that 10 years per groped body part?

That was my point!  I was responding to someone who said the penalty was 10 years and that that was not "realistic".
