CHIANG RAI, 29 March 2018 (NNT) – The first shipment of fresh chicken was exported from Chiang Rai in northern Thailand to Yunnan in southern China.

Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Niwat Sutemechaikul, along with China's Consul General to Chiang Mai Ren Yisheng, presided over the ceremony marking the first shipment of the Thai chicken products to China at Chiang Saen Cargo Port in Chiang Rai.

The first batch of fresh chicken products worth 35 million baht were shipped in 14 containers along Mekong River to Yunnan province, following China's import embargo due to an outbreak of bird flu in 2004.

He said the Department of Livestock Development previously invited Chinese officials to inspect factories and food manufacturing system in Thailand, leading to the establishment of an agreement on frozen and fresh chicken import to China from Thailand.

He said the agreement, which allows 7 factories in Thailand to export chicken products to China from 7 March 2018, will help enhance the relations between both countries, while the export from 7 factories is expected to generate 7 billion baht revenue per year, a number which could be raised to 20 billion baht should the permit be given to all 19 factories.
