Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra talks with army chief on Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha at the Army Club in Bangkok on Dec. 3, 2013

BANGKOK — After nearly 10 years as Pheu Thai Party’s southern bloc, a coalition of Muslim politicians in the south that’s switched sides six times is set to do it again.

A week after word got out that they are setting up a new party of their own, a leader of the Wadah group said Wednesday that its chameleon nature should not be viewed as betrayal.

Yeah?

Thai politics-just like Thai Scrabble,

I doubt if they will be nominating the current incumbent as the future pm.

Whether this party sticks with Pheu Thai or not is probably academic - since it is highly unlikely that Prayut and his gang will allow the Pheu Thai party to run in any (bogus) election. That was the whole point (or one of them) of the last four years: to oust Pheu Thai from the political landscape.

Whether Prayut and his mob will succeed without a degree of bloodshed is very unlikely in my view. But succeed in keeping the wished-for representatives of the (majority) Thai people from power, through all manner of devious and disgraceful means, he probably will.

Yet another politician who hasnt spent a day doing real military service dressing up in uniform.

Disgraceful

Yes - Prayut, a soldier-less soldier, calls himself a 'politician' these days (when it suits him) - so I would agree with your comment (although you may not agree with my interpretation - ha ha!).

Prawit shows remarkable restraint by not staring at Yingluck's chest and medals.

Great news piece by piece Thaksins power is eroded. Finally people start to understand the PTP is a sinking ship. May many more follow their example.

I hope the new parties fill up the void. The old has failed its time for the new.

This is no stab in the back like our red leaning members claim. This is all above board letting the people know before an election. Let thw people judge if they still want to vote PTP they can.

The south is not their power base anyway.  It looks to be more of a small chip than a crack.  As Sutep said, the PTP will win which makes the coup a total waste of time and reputation.

Well to be fair, he didn't declare himself to be  politician until several years after the photo was taken.

I would agree with you on one thing, yes, there are interesting times ahead.

One of the most interesting times is likely to be when the junta engineers some excuse to disband Pheu Thai or prevent them from standing for election.

As an aside, one of the more interesting aspects, as a farang observer, will be watching the entertaining mental gymnastics which will no doubt be demonstrated by various junta apologists trying to justify such a move!

No need to justify anything, a new law has been drafted preventing outside influences on the PTP ( Thaksin). I mean, having the PM being told what to do by an outside influence in skype calls is not really a normal thing, neither is it that the MP's come to ask Thaksin for his blessing and new positions. He is the defacto leader while nobody voted for him not real democratic.

That is of course a good thing I mean in no normal democracy would they allow a criminal on the run lead a party and finance it.

So yea there is a chance the PTP gets disbanded unless they make a clean break from Thaksin. That is part of the reason why many are defecting, they understand that as long as they are associated with Thaksin they run a riskl.

This article is clearly written by someone anti PTP.....And of course Robbie picks the pieces, that suits his agenda

That the southern Muslims were going to start their own party is old news.......And was okay'ed by Thaksin..

You clearly have no idea about, how strong the Thaksin-brand still is in the north and the north-east.....

If the election is ever allowed to take place......and the PTP is not banned.....They will win a landslide

Prayut knows that and that is why the elections are postponed again and again...

And that new law is doing it's job......??

Yesterday in Japan...They just have to show up to get more attention than The Great Savior aka Prayut will ever get...

I don't think any country with a proper democratic system would allow a party like the PTP stand in an election.  50 of its MPs are facing corruption charges. It's controlled by a criminal on the run who finances and pays all the MPs. Of course there are some misinformed people who will claim that the 17 cases of proven corruption against Taskin are politically motivated, including of course the huge loan to the Burmese government without Parliamentary approval provided they buy his satellite equipment!!  and I'm sure no country would accept people like  PTP Chalerm as a cabinet minister.

Khaosod is certainly no anti Thaksin newspaper, and if you read the full article you would know its not just the South.

Not sure if this law is doing its job.. but I think the PTP will be in hot water if the powers that be can prove Thaksin leads the PTP. Then they might get dissolved. That is why at the last meeting with Thaksin suddenly all that attended said that it was not political. You need to keep up a bit JOC.

Muslim's are not "switching sides" but more just not committing itself to the PTP.

Muslim politicians are taking a more independent political stance. In view of the substantial Muslim opposition to the junta's referendum on the constitution and Prayut's failure to successfully engage in peace talks with the Muslim insurgency, I doubt the Wadah group will align with pro-military Democrats or any other pro-military party.

The impact to the PTP is only symbolic. No matter what party gains a majority in a coalition, Wadah will have an almost nonexistent presence in parliament.

Furthermore, due to the influence of Suthep, it has been the Democrats that have dominated the south in elections. Better to examine Suthep's talk of leaving the Democrats and creating a new party, ie., to nominate Prayut as PM versus the Democrats who likely favor Abhisit.

That photo was taken less than 6 months before the coup.

Looking at his facial expression, he already knew what lay ahead. TRAITOR!

Wishful thinking robblok- the Wadah faction actually went to see Thaksin before asking permission to leave. They are not important in terms of forming a government. The article just mentions a few rumours of factions thinking of leaving Pheau Thai- no doubt the military is doing all it can to weaken Pheua Thai because if itwins the election it may be 'check bin time' for Prayuth etc- PheuaThai seek revenge for the coup.

Note Thaksin is seen with Yingluk in nearly every photo these days. He knows she is viewed sympathetically by all PheuaThai supporters. He is just telling the voters Pheua Thai is here to stay and no doubt they will remain loyal to the party.

Dissolve the party? No problem, it's been done before- Thai Rak Thai and Palang Prachachon mutated into Pheua Thai.

Or maybe they just have that wonderful eldest brother / youngest sister relationship the Hollywood has often dreamed about!

To all the political "experts" here....

Not exactly new information. Just like corruption, most Thais accept those misgivings. Thaksin in Japan predict 220-230 seats in the coming election. I wouldn’t take his prediction lightly and he knows better than the junta.
