Jai Dee Posted January 25, 2007 Share Posted January 25, 2007 TAT warns tourists of duty free allowance The Tourism Authority of Thailand warns international tourists of duty free allowance for tobacco and alcoholic beverage products while advising Thai travelers to choose registered tour operators. TAT deputy governor Surapol Sawetseranee said the Excise Department has seized many tobacco products and alcoholic drinks from foreign travelers, and they have also faced considerable fines since the new duty free allowance requires them to carry a restricted amount of those items. As a result, complaints have been made to foreign embassies, and the image of Thailand is also affected. Thus, the TAT has called for cooperation with the Thai International Airways, the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), King Power International, as well as TAT offices in foreign countries to publish the correct information on the new duty free allowance in Thailand. In addition, the TAT would like Thai travelers to double check the tour operators’ records and authenticities with the Tourist Business and Guide Registration Office before making their decisions to travel with them. The TAT has received a lot of complaints about tour operators who took advantage of their clients. The article mentions a new lower limit. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. It has been 1 litre of alcoholic beverage and 200 cigarettes for the last 25 years to my certain knowledge. The only difference is that they are enforcing it now!!
