Teaching In Burma

I met someone not long ago who had taught in a Burmese high school for a year. It's rare, apparently; the number of legal foreign teachers there (and you pretty much have to be legal there) was in the double digits for the whole *country* while he was there. Of course there was government scrutiny of him in the classroom and out, but he didn't seem to regret the experience. I have no idea what he was paid.

When I went to Burma I noticed that English was widely spoken. That may be due to the large Indian population.

Even though I'd think there'd be a demand for native English speaking teachers.

I knew some teachers at the British Council in Rangoon. They were quite used to having government spooks in their classes. Bear in mind also, that you'd (probably) only be teaching the middle classes, most of whom (not all) have got where they are by cosying up to the murderous illegitimate government that terrorises the country. Cool, huh?
