SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Several Silicon Valley leaders called for increased gun control on Tuesday afternoon after a woman at the headquarters of YouTube shot and wounded three people before taking her own life.

Tech companies have largely avoided the topic of gun control in the United States, but they have previously pushed for progressive stances on other hot-topic issues, ranging from climate change to same-sex marriage and comprehensive immigration reform. At least three major chief executives took up gun control after the shooting.

“We can’t keep being reactive to this, thinking and praying it won’t happen again at our schools, jobs, or our community spots,” tweeted Twitter Inc and Square Inc CEO Jack Dorsey. “It’s beyond time to evolve our policies.”

Joining Dorsey were Uber Technologies Inc CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Box Inc CEO Aaron Levie, who respectively sent tweets on Tuesday saying #EndGunViolence and #NeverAgain, two Twitter hashtags commonly used by proponents of gun control.

“On behalf of the team at @Uber, sending support to everyone @YouTube and @Google, and gratitude to the heroic first responders,” Khosrowshahi tweeted. “Another tragedy that should push us again to #EndGunViolence”

Emergency calls reporting gunfire in San Bruno, California, at the headquarters of Alphabet Inc’s YouTube began to pour in early Tuesday afternoon, according to the city of San Bruno. Authorities have not released the identities of the suspected shooter or the victims.

The tweets on Thursday could be an indication that Silicon Valley may soon weigh in on the epidemic of mass killings by firearms in the United States.

“Incredibly sad to see the YouTube shooting today,” Levie tweeted. “Our thoughts are with our Google friends and their families.

#NeverAgain”

Sundar Pichai and Susan Wojcicki, the CEOs of Google and YouTube respectively, also issued statements on Tuesday while avoiding the topic of gun control.

"There are no words to describe how horrible it was to have an active shooter @YouTube today," Wojcicki said. "Our deepest gratitude to law enforcement & first responders for their rapid response. Our hearts go out to all those injured & impacted today. We will come together to heal as a family."

Other tech leaders expressed sympathy for the employees of YouTube on social media on Tuesday without referencing gun control. Those included Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook, Amazon.com Inc CEO Jeff Bezos, Salesforce.com Inc CEO Marc Benioff and Facebook Inc Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

“From everyone at Apple, we send our sympathy and support to the team at YouTube and Google, especially the victims and their families,” Cook said in a tweet.

Right, ' largely avoided' the issue, but when it came to their own safety

all of a sudden they become vocal and concern about it, go back to

your lavish offices, keyboards and screens hypocreats....

#amend the 2nd is a hash tag, it doesn't include or exclude anything, it gets re-tweeted lots of times and then 'goes viral'.  It's what kids do these days. 555

What all these liberal anti-2A activists have ignored is the truth - as usual.

Truth 1.  California has the strictest gun control laws in the country. This woman ignored them. She and others like her will ignore any laws banning guns. There are over 300 million guns in USA and they will not 'disappear' because any right or law is changed.

Truth 2.  Mexico had the same Constitutional rights to guns as Americans. In the 1970s the Constitution was 'clarified' and laws were changed and within a few  years severe limits were put in place on the purchase and ownership of guns. The result is massive amounts of crimes by criminals and corrupt police/army with guns. The outcome was worse than if people had been allowed to keep and use their own guns. Many say the corrupt pollies took away the People's guns so they could control them better - what they did was allow the criminals and corrupt Police and Army to take control.

Truth 3.  If Youtube HQ had armed guards, like in a bank, this attack would not have occurred.

Truth 4.  The woman did what she did because she was mentally retarded.  There is not enough done to detain and assess people with mental problems in USA, and in a country with over 300 million guns, that is a crazy adherence to liberal 'human rights' policies.

Having a country awash with firearms is a crazy adherence to a self-created "human rights" policy.

BTW where do you think Mexicans get their guns from?

You can't detain half the population.

Half is very conservative, try 80% of teens and adults on some type of medication.

Freakshow but a windfall for the drug companies.

Free society where armed guards are present in company headguards as well as banks?

I remember taking a photo of an armed guard at front of our company building in Manila. I took the photo as it displayed the absurdity of unstable 3rd world country.

It started with the Constitution over 200 years ago and is nothing to do with human rights. Switzerland has more people with guns (look it up).

Many are illegally transported from USA - but more get into the criminals hands via the Mexican police and army. Quite a few also come up from Sth American countries.

Welcome to Youtube HQ !!

I agree with your sentiment - felt the same when I arrived at Delhi airport and saw soldiers with automatic rifles on guard.  But then again - LA and NY airport have armed guards too (hand guns).  Unfortunately the reality is that there are armed guards to stop people committing armed crimes in 1st 2nd and 3rd world locations - usually after many gun crimes have been committed in a similar location.

Trump removed restrictions put in place by Obama that restricted the rights of people diagnosed with any of a list of specified mental illnesses to buy guns.

I dont want to argue with another liberal, but assuming you are not one and are willing to listen, I offer the following.

Congress passed a bill last year, that Trump signed off on, that removed an  Obama last-minute regulation which would not have had an impact on gun violence in the US.  Disability rights groups had their own objections to the Obama regulation and some liberal groups, including the ACLU, urged Trump to sign off on the new bill and reverse the Obama regulation. It was not working, it was an abuse of regulatory powers, it was causing privacy concerns, and it was just plain wrong.

Specifically, what Obama did was order the Social Security Administration to take the list of people who were deemed so severely mentally ill that they are unfit to handle their own disability benefits and forward it to the FBI. The FBI was then instructed to incorporate that list in the background checks used to disqualify people from gun ownership.  This is obviously an extremely narrow measure that wouldn’t have had an enormous impact one way or the other - it was merely another Obama 'look at me - am I not wonderful' episode.  There is not one episode of such a severely mentally handicapped person ever even using a gun to kill another person let alone a mass shooting.  It was just another Obama 'show pony' stunt, done just before he left office (a red spider).

The way Obama did it (and many other things) is not the way to do it.  What is needed is for laws to be passed by Congress/Senate that are compliant with civil rights and privacy laws. Using POTUS powers to direct a Dept to inform the FBI about certain people without due process, and to then direct the FBI to include them on the blacklist, was not the right way to get this done. Both NRA and ACLU heavily appealed against this regulation.

This is what Trump actually said in Feb :  "I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue - I hope!"

What the liberal media (TV, Social and Print) says is often a deliberate distortion of the facts to make Trump look bad. Trump did not repeal an Obama restriction on mentally ill people gaining access to guns. He signed off on a bill that removed a regulation that was a breach of civil liberties (ACLU) and civil rights (NRA) and would have been struck out in the Supreme Court anyway.

To include/exclude what?
Guns for natural born citizens only.
Immigrants shouldn't have the right to bear arms.
How does this immigrant who barely spoke a word of English get one in a state where they have some of the strictest gun laws?

As I recall, selling guns to native Americans was previously considered a crime.
