Road carnage: Now there are prizes for the best dash cam clips!

Daily News in cooperation with the national legislature, police and anti drink driving foundation are giving prizes for the best road carnage videos from dash cams.

It is hoped that they will help lessen accidents, raise the issue of bad driving and bring miscreants to justice.

It is part of the news media's "Volunteer Eyes of the Traffic" campaign.

Top prize of 20,000 baht goes to Wipawee Janthadee with "Pick Up Hit and Run". Her video from March 24th shows Nopadol Wongwongsa, 38, collide with a motorcycle on the Chonburi bypass heading for Pattaya.

Nopadol said he didn't see what happened but has since admitted all to Samet police who continue to investigate and wait for further reports on the state of the victim in hospital.

This video featured what looked like a chase through a red light.

The runners-up prize of 10,000 baht went to Thanasan Jampathai for "Benz Woman Changes Her Mind" filmed on March 26th by the bridge on Rachadapisek Road crossing the Lat Prao intersection.

A female driver decided to abort using the bridge and change lanes resulting in two motorcycles crashing into the back of her. She has admitted everything but this continues to be the subject of investigation by Suthisan police.

Third prize of 5,000 baht has already been seen on Thai visa back in early March. The person who filmed "Hit Once Hit Again" was not mentioned but the footage featured 22 year old Pornthep Wangkornklang running over a motorcyclist not once but twice.

He then went on a rampage of destruction in the Sri Nakharin area of Samut Prakarn damaging other vehicles admitting later that he couldn't drive.

Samrong Neua police have him facing the courts for negligent and reckless driving causing injury.

Six other consolation prizes will also be given out today (Thursday) in a ceremony at the national legislature at 1pm.

Oh God! Turning the whole thing into a competition for filming the best crashes? This is going to do nothing to quell the carnage, in fact it is more likely to encourage it.

don't know if they will do any of that but these sample videos strengthen my desire to minimize driving in thailand

  • If the price money was collected from the driver at fault, this would "nearly" make sense. Amazing Thailand!

it clarifies guilt and it is not likely to encourage faulty driving.

cameras at red light could use this technique,

always watching, and always seek out the culprit through the number,

just that the police also always need a camera pointed at them

....coming soon, best shooting video followed by best ten on one bashing video.

I am not at all convinced that this is remotely a good idea. We have sufficient idiocy on our roads already. Introducing a competition to film and make public gruesome shots of people being injured and killed, makes the whole thing feel like some sort of macabre sport.

The Thai Dash Cam Oscars.....All practical effects, no CGI.

I believe it will not be too long before new cars come fitted with dash cams and maybe some time in the distant future could become mandatory.

Sensible idea lets go make a video of our appalling driving the bigger the crash the more we stash what could possibly go wrong.

Jesus Christ. What is going on here?

I'm at a loss trying to understand how a dashcam competition can cause

more accidents, on the contrary, it will encourage people to have more

of them so road accidents will be fully documented and rouge behaviour

can be studied for better traffic management and solutions....

Off course! It´s illegal to not join the competition.

What could ever go wrong with this idea...

Of the first two prize winning videos the police have still not completed their enquiries; their investigation goes on.  How much does it cost to lose this vital evidence?

Instead of daily and weekly switching all TV stations to Mr. P., I suggest "foolish driver video of the day/week" on all channels at prime soap opera time.

With comments of course.

Identifying the uploader is asking for probs. Newsworthy clips are better sent via viralhog etc

HTH

WOW, that I was waiting for already....

Around 30.000 people die on the roads....there will be at least 10 videos a day....HURRAH

20,000 baht prize vs 500 baht fine, that's better odds than the lottery. Let's go kill and maim.

maybe its not such a bad idea, bit hard for someone to worm there way out of it when its won the prize for best dash cam video.

Possibly this idea could be followed up by making all drivers learn how to drive safely and to be thoroughly tested before a license is issued.

In the first video she almost caused more carnage herself, a motorcycle and two cars almost got taken out by her trying to chase the pickup!

This "Buddhist" society, constantly claiming its high moral values has no respect for human lives. It is SICK to the bone in too many ways !

Hey, this is a great idea. How else will these matters be dealt with. I think this will help bring perpetrators to justice. So thiese crimes will not just get forgotten. When the public cares, so will the police. good idea.

You can have all the contest one like, show them for the Thais to get their driver license or renewal it will make no difference if what they see is consider the way to drive in Thailand and not told cited, arrested as to what both parties did wrong especially the truck!

Oh god, i can see it now......Somchai follow me n get yer camera on, we can make some money!!
Exactly. This will develop into a racket by people to act out a crash scenario - for the purpose of making money - how things happen here.
Stupid idea!
