PHUKET:-- Quick action by an inmate at the Baan Bangjo correctional facility in Srisoonthorn, in central Phuket, may have saved a man from drowning in a lagoon this morning (April 6).

Police were called to the scene, near the Regional Medical Sciences Center Phuket building, at 8:30am after being notified of the incident by local village chief (Phu Yai Baan) Thawatchai Pinchaisiri.

The man, Yothin Krongkeha, 26, from Loei province, had already been rushed to Thalang Hospital, then transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town, reported Thalang Police.

Building local province in-ground swimming pools/centres would save so many lives...Sooo many thais can't swim

and as well as a great leisure activity they could save themselves in such situations and others!

A friend of ours originally from rural Uttaradit graduated from a university, worked hard on her English skills and now will begin work aboard a cruise ship out of Florida. Her greatest fear? The ship capsizing, she can't swim...

Tell her not to worry, unless the ship capsizes within sight of land then the ones who can swim are going to die too.

Looks like some cruise company does not conform to legal requirements that seafarers must have certain training completed. Even basic training includes a swim in a deep pool.

She may well be in a position on the ship where she's classed as a passenger and not marine crew, it's very common.

According to Maritime Labor Convention everyone is crew except real passenger. Also CBP would not accept crew on passenger manifest. Whilst certain crew may get away without some Training / certification requirement, such as basic firefighting, crowd management etc.  the personal survival training is a must. That includes rudimentary swimming.

Back to the thread, I think swimming should be taught in school as part of PE. I could really become handy.

Nope, I know guys who've worked offshore on ships for years that can't swim.

You can do your HUET and basic offshore seas survival (in Europe, UK or Australia) and be  non-swimmer, they even have designated bump caps for non swimmers at the courses,
