Win10 metered mode cannot stay turned on in ethernet settings?

Hi,

I like to use a smart phone tethered to Win10 using USB as an internet connection  on 4G network thro mobile ph. Prefer this to wifi hotspot from phone as I can keep the phone batter charged at same time.

When I try to meter on settings to stop massive Win10 system updates to hit my 4G charges, the meter goes off in the USB tethered mode and only will stay on if using a wifi hotspot mode in Win10 settings?

Can anyone explain how to get ethernet metered to stay on. If I chose on then exit settings it goes off immediately I exit settings, unlike wifi metered mode which remembers my choice. Or am I misunderstanding the meter mode somehow?

Appreciate any help thnks. These Win10 updates are costing me data charges!

Its possible to use your phone as a wifi hotspot, sharing your 4G connection, wifi conection from computer to phone. The phone can still be plugged into USB and charging (only), using wifi but there is no network connection via USB unless you turn it on. (or buy a charge only cable for your phone)

I would forget about any USB tethering and just use wifi hotspot.

Ethernet is a separate connection and your phone doesn't have an Ethernet port.  USB tethering probably does some sort of virtual Ethernet via USB, limiting the networking, features available. USB isnt a network connection and work around to use it as networking are very limited. (OSI Layers 1 and 2 only)

You would need some specific software to control what traffic goes via the wifi connection. Better just to set your win10 updates to manual and say no. Or take your laptop to starbucks for a hour.

That may or may not work for you as Win10 treats a USB connection as a virtual Ethernet connection, as mentioned. It definitely works on normal Ethernet connections as I have some people who use it in conjunction with a 4G router. Worth a try anyway.

The simple option to set updates to manual has been removed, except in the pro version of Win10. To do this now in the home version involves jumping through quite a lot of hoops, but it is possible. I had to do it for someone for whom the latest major update was failing repeatedly and who was fed up with Windows rolling back every time it was started.
