You have decided to make Thailand your long-term home. Whether your reasons are rooted in family, employment, or a genuine affinity for the country, you may be considering the next steps toward securing an extended stay. Presented below are six options for long-term residence in Thailand, arranged from the most common to the more unconventional. Each visa category is outlined based on key decision-making factors, including duration of stay, fundamental eligibility requirements, and associated costs. While this article does not provide an exhaustive analysis, it offers a concise overview to help you navigate your long-stay options effectively. 1. Best suited for: The Retirement Visa is best suited for individuals aged 50 and above who are seeking a straightforward and cost-effective long-term stay option. Among the various long-stay visa types, it generally involves the least amount of administrative paperwork. Work Eligibility in Thailand: Not permitted Key Requirements: Applicants must be 50 years of age or older A minimum balance of THB 800,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign bank account) for the initial 90-day visa application For the one-year extension, a minimum balance of THB 800,000 must be maintained in a Thai bank account for at least 60 days prior to submission of the extension application 90-day residential reporting to Thai immigration is required Associated Government Fees: Initial 90-day visa application fee: approximately THB 2,000 (USD 80) One-year extension fee: THB 1,900 Multiple-entry permit fee: THB 3,800 2. Non-Immigrant “O” Marriage Visa The official designation of this visa is the Non-Immigrant “O” Marriage Visa. While it may be granted to individuals intending to reside with a Thai spouse, child, or adopted child, it is predominantly issued to foreign nationals married to Thai citizens, thereby commonly referred to as the "Marriage Visa”. Best suited for: Foreign nationals married to Thai citizens who wish to reside in Thailand long term and are interested in working within the country. Length of Stay: Initially granted for 90 days, followed by a one-year extension, with the possibility of indefinite annual renewals thereafter. Work Eligibility in Thailand: Employment is permitted with a work permit Key Requirements: Must be legally married to a Thai national A minimum balance of THB 400,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign bank account) for the initial 90-day visa application For the one-year extension, a minimum balance of THB 400,000 must be maintained in a Thai bank account for at least 60 days prior to the application 90-day reporting to Thai immigration is required Associated Government Fees: Initial 90-day visa application fee: approximately THB 2,000 (USD 80) One-year extension fee: THB 1,900 Multiple-entry permit fee: THB 3,800 3. It presents one of the more cost-effective long-term visa options and is issued as a multiple-entry visa. Benefits include access to the Airport Fast Track Service, annual immigration reporting (instead of the standard 90-day reports), and the flexibility to travel in and out of Thailand without the need for additional re-entry permits. Length of Stay: Initial validity of 5 years, with eligibility for a 5-year visa extension, allowing for a total stay of up to 10 years. Eligible to relocate to Thailand with spouses, minor children, and dependent parents.
