Ah yes! The hotbeds of serious organised crime. Wonder how many drug dealers were busy plying their trade down the road?

  • Were there any arrests for speeding or driving too fast for conditions or otherwise reckless driving on the roads and freeways, particularly speeding double-decker buses or young actresses in expensiv

Seems immigration is highly successful in keeping out the criminal Farangs..

It's also another way in ensuring that those who are work permitted have medical care (30 baht scheme).

It ensures fewer criminals (Police checks are required - especially for Foreign teachers).

While many suspect these targetted raids are xenophobic (and they may be right) Thailand has become an easy place for those with a criminal history live and work. Stepping up measures against this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Where do all the Thai Criminals go? at the poorest end of the scale, neighboring countries, the same works for those criminals in neighboring countries.

There is nothing wrong at all in legalizing a labor force.

This is not a perfect world, there is no black and white, no perfect answer. Periodic raids scratch the surface, but its something and a step in the direction of protecting Thai citizens... If that is xenophobic, well then so are many other countries who insist on work permits for its foreign labor force...

well this is one thing i found quite interesting in the article.

"Surachet threatened to take action against schools that hired foreign teachers whose visas has expired."

I know they are not the labour department but still no mention of WP's with any of the arrests, it seems that schools are allowed to hire teachers without permits, as everyone knows they always have been really,.

Now if the labour department did the same raids then i would expect to see alot of farangs and filipinos being arrested, but obviously the labour department lets that slide

To be fair, pointing at 81 would lose focus and really all the previous arguments are about focus, posters believe that police/immigration/army should focus on more important things in their clamour for the limelight and perhaps they should, but they have chosen recently to focus in the illegal immigration area and no doubt there are reasons for this. This is TLOS, The Land of Self-obsession where it's important to promote yourself publicly at any given opportunity to enhance your own career. It is also a good idea if that publicity is at the heart of the populace and of course as dirty foreigners are the root of all evil, nothing would be more popular than routing out evil doing immigrants and they would consider 81 as a significant catch, so no matter who actually did the catching doesn't really matter, what matters is that the public think it was you, well not you personally, but anyone who thinks they can benefit from squeezing into a publicity shoot. They won't tackle the big issues (as you see them) because they are too difficult, too fraught with career danger (unpopular) and not likely to net a promotion.

Then you'd be wrong.

The Thais have used (and got extremely rich off) the slave labour of Burmese, Cambodians and Laotians to build nearly every large, commercial building in Bangkok and none of them were 'legal' back in the day. There were millions of these so-called illegal workers here in the 90's and early 00's. The recent registering and monitoring of these workers is just another step towards increasing xenophobia and nationalism that is gradually making this country a more unpleasant place to be.

Despite that, this operation X-Ray Foreigner is nothing more than a joke so the local plod can laze about all day but still show results by arresting a few nobodies.

If you think otherwise you haven't worked this place or the locals out yet.

And America was made great on the backs of slaves. White slaves, and then black slaves as more numbers were required.

"Back in the day" isn't the way forward. Or are you suggesting all countries should scrap their immigration controls and turn a blind eye to those entering illegally, overstaying their permissions to stay or working illegally?

Hotbeds of Non-"tea money" payers :coffee1:

Nothing sums up Thailand like the way that this appeared below the headline "Songkran kicks off with 2,700 charges of drunk driving; 39 Die On 1st ‘Dangerous Day’ Of Songkran"

I wouldn't mind so much if they would admit that for various undisclosed reasons they can't actually solve their "problem" by going after the root of it: the school management and ownership who are actively seeking illegal teachers and seeking to maximize profits by hiring these cheap, easily coerced workers.

Things are going down the tubes here in Thailand, not a single Caucasian foreigner arrested, or maybe they ( Caucasian )are more clever and able to hide better, ether way bad news for the BiB as the Asians unable to bride themselves out(lack of $)

No... because the Immigration Police do not police the roads, they police those breaking Immigration Law.

So, your criticism is of the Immigration Police not doing the job of another division?

Also 2700 people were charged with drink driving over songkran by the normal police,  Why do some people on this site just like to continual slag down anything the police do to improve a situation

If they're targeting schools, it makes sense to allow the NES people to stay. They allow children to learn proper pronunciation and, more importantly, allow the schools to charge more so have more money for extra things, like kick-backs.

I wonder if there has been or is ongoing a bit of a row between the various "recruiting agencies" for foreign teachers?

Someone cutting in on someone else's turf perhaps?

It can be the case, but this enforcement was planned to happen a while ago, as part of a general enforcement on illegal labour.  That got delayed and up until now there has been an amnesty. I think it also serves as a warning to the bulk of schools who will soon be recruiting for the coming new school year.

But I am surprised that none of us white folk were arrested.  I've never heard of schools employing some of the nationalities mentioned.

sounds like a lead in to a joke..''what do 4 loations 7 Nigerians 3 Indians and 1 Cambodian have in common???

Not solely immigration police. Interesting that for once no farangs listed.

Suddenly these police are very hardworking.

It's good that they search the schools now when it's school holiday, that way there should be no problem in those schools next semester.....

I think the job they are doing is very important, but in the bigger scope of things the way the police is funded the other headline 2700 drunk drivers how many death on the 1st day minus all the injuries in the emergency the resources are already thin so these guys will be around they are overstaying so they will be there when Songkran is over?  Lets assign them to take care of the bigger problem!

Surachet threatened to take action against schools that hired foreign teachers whose visas has expired.

If he carried out his threat he might actually get somewhere !!!

Quote

Surachet said 13 foreigners were arrested for overstaying their visas. They included four Laotians, three Indians, two Vietnamese, two Nigerians, one Cambodian and one Malaysian.

He said 62 foreigners – 25 Laotians, 24 from Myanmar, four Indians, four Cambodians, two Vietnamese, one Pakistani, and one Liberian – were arrested on charges of unlawful entry into the Kingdom.

Why not say "Asians" or "Asians and Middle East"?

When a girl puts her feet on chair in front of couple people the title is immediately "Westerner"
