Three car owners have reported to Saku Police that their cars were splashed by acrylic paint when they were driving past the Songkran zone at Nai Yang Beach on April 13, Songkran day.

A famous Thai Facebook page named ‘queentogetherisone’ posted one of the cases in Phuket showing the pictures of thick globs of paint on the cars with an explanation, ‘We just polishing the cars and on April 13 we drove to join Songkran Festival at Nai Yang Beach and there were some people throwing colour to our car. When I tried to wipe it out with hand, it stuck tightly.

“I managed to find a car care product that removes this acrylic colour from the cars duco without destroying the car paint finish and I would like to share this to show that someone over exaggerated the fun without thinking about the consequences.”

I drove to the Nan Province on Saturday and very few  tossers.  About 10 am on Sunday in wife's relations car ...Wallop a great big think load of yellow paint arrived on the screen , wipers only just cleared it and after 2 days of soakran it was still on the bonnet.  If this stuff had hit a person on a motorsai they could of lost their sight.

It gets nastier every year. I stayed inside and am going out for some food shopping just now.

Far from it, I experienced it much friendlier this year. Far less ice water, colours or powder in the water.

I dont know what they mix  in with the water sometimes but a few  years back whatever it was  had to be cut  out of my paintwork, I simply dont go out now as it  cost a few thousand to finally cut and polish it out.

So NamKangMan thinks a panel shop fits into the story. There has been no evidence given that back up the unfortunate motorist's claim that it was an acrylic paint, and I think that it is unlikely that he has had it analysed. Then there is the greatly differing types of acrylic paints, there are single pack non-convertible solution acrylics, there are water thinned dispersion acrylics - known as emulsions by the Brits and latex by the Yanks -  both descriptions technically inaccurate, as used for decoration of the interior and exterior of buildings. Then there are 2K acrylics as used by the auto repair industry and for the protection of structural steel. The use of acrylic paints in panel shops is a very small part of the total usage of acrylic paints.

Water based decorative acrylics would be difficult to remove from car enamel if they were left on for a while in the temperatures we have been having lately. When dry the best way to remove them is with Methylated Spirit (Meths), if this is unavailable Thai Whiskey should work just as well.

All very interesting but Songkran is about throwing water.

Anyone who throws paint of any kind, whether they are an expat or a local is a special kind of ahole in my book.
