YouTube star slams rip-off taxi driver

The owner of a popular free English-teaching Facebook page has posted a viral video clip complaining about a taxi driver at the Suvarnabhumi Airport who tried to overcharge him.

 

The clip posted by Danny Mac on his Easy English Thai site on Tuesday evening had already received 1 million views by noon on Wednesday and it had been shared more than 19,600 times and received over 35,000 reactions.

 

Mac, who sounds like a North American, recounted that on Tuesday when he returned from Chiang Mai, he took a taxi from the airport and the taxi tried to convince him to pay Bt500 to go to his condominium.

 

 

Mac, whose page has over 65,000 followers, said the taxi driver claimed that the meter in his taxi had malfunctioned so Mac said he would find another cab.

 

He said the driver eventually agreed to turn on the meter but then asked for Bt300 for the expressway charge.

 

Mac said the three gates cost no more than Bt100 and he gave the driver Bt200 but received no change.

 

On arrival the meter read Bt375 so Mac gave a Bt500 note to the driver and the driver told him: "It's Bt500, OK?"

 

Mac argued that the metre stated Bt375 so the driver said he had to add Bt50 airport fee. Mac reportedly said it would add up to Bt425, so the diver should give him at least Bt40 change.

 

The driver allegedly complained that Mac was tight-fisted. The driver, according to Mac's account, said a farang should not be too stingy so Mac was a "farang khee nok [guava]" and not a real farang.

 

Mac said he felt it was unacceptable to be criticised by the taxi driver so he demanded all the change of Bt75. He said the taxi driver agreed to give all the change and told him to exit the cab immediately.

 

Mac asked his followers whether it was right for him not to give any tip to the taxi driver as he was dissatisfied with his service.

 

Most of the comments supported Mac, saying he had done the right thing and encouraged him to file a complaint with the Thai authorities.

 

The clip was recounted in Thai and Mac said he communicated in Thai with the driver. Mac recorded the end of the conversation before he got out of the taxi.

I doubt the reporting YouTube star will encounter any problems whatsoever.    He sounds like he's been around the block more than once and as reported, he was speaking Thai with the taxi driver.

Well first he gave him 200 bht & got no change

Then gave him 500 bht & was lucky to get 75 bht 

 

They should be charged for stealing or fraud 

If I was Thai and saw him, I would ask for more or kick him out from the get go.

And certain sections of Thai society are unpopular with Thais.. And I am sure Thai on a low income would kick up a similar fuss if they were short changed. 

He gave 200 for expressway fees which cost 100 and got no change. 

 

He paid 500 for the cab which cost 425 and got no change. 

 

That’s 175 baht change he should have got out of a total of 700 baht. 

 

The cab driver is NOT entitled to take his own tip! A big tip considering the total cost too.

It’s about time people started to stand up against rip off merchants. It’s about princeable. Well done.  A few more vidios  and maybe just maybe the Thais will get it,

So he didnt call the number on the 50 baht voucher to register his complaint? How much of this story is true or just lieing click bait for his illegal YouTube channel.

If he's so experienced why didn't he have the correct change to hand over. This is a publicity stunt.

Just a low income blue collar worker trying to squeeze a few extra baht from someone who probably wouldn’t miss it much anyway, it’s not right I know, but compare the lifestyle of enraged Mac or whatever his name is to the taxi drivers lifestyle and quality of life, then you’ll see the real crime; it’s social injustice and maybe Danny Mac should think about that instead of ranting about his couple of hundred baht..... <deleted>.

Quite right. 

I've had many thousands of rides with Bangkok taxi drivers with no problem; the few problems I have encountered can usually be traced to an over-familiarity with tourists.

Those taxi drivers can be scum.

This has been a popular subject of discussion over the last day with Thai people that I am around. To a person, they all sided with the rider and were offended and embarrassed by the driver's conduct.

Yo Mac! Songkran is waaaay over Dude! Take off your water protective glasses.  

The header says "Breaking News"

    then tells us the story of a grumpy Taxi driver and his encounter with a passenger......"Lordy".....save us from the reporting of these ridicules stories. Is that all one million people habe to care about?

Yes I was expecting a 500 baht rip-off for what should have been say a 200 baht fare! 

Arguing over what many would regard as the tip. Surely there are better examples of the bad behaviour of taxi drivers..

 

I also am amused by Thais calling me khee niaow, as it is like the very black pot calling the kettle.

Motor mouth needs to get a life and stop clogging up bandwidth with stupid stories of how he intimidated a taxi driver in the third world.

Thanks Thongkorn, for the  unintentional chuckle you  gave me first thing in the morning.

 

I could easily have written the same thing but simply remember a  saying  regarding  the head person in a school.

So we should get ripped of by greedy uneducated people and just look happy and accept it ?
