When there is a Non-Immigrant Visa, is there also an Immigrant Visa?

Featured Replies

I am wondering why all Thailand visa's I've found so far are prefixed "Non-".

My western thinking tells me if there is stress on the negative "Non-" then there should be also the positive variant.

Then I thought, perhaps there is a different category for immigrant, which then because it is immigrant, would not be called visa. But I doubt that... Because...

The Philippines has a "Quota Immigrant Visa". Does Thailand also have some sort of "Immigrant Visa"?

Otherwise what is the "Non-" supposed to communicate? Is it supposed to communicate "you are not an immigrant here, you are a guest"?

Yes, with temporary permission to stay.

It’s possible to apply for indefinite leave to stay (Residence Permit), which would be the closest thing to an “immigrant visa”. The criteria is strict and applications are limited each year for each nationality.

Permanent residents have a permission to stay based on an immigrant visa, more specifically a non-quota immigrant visa. I have also seen an immigrant visa once without the prefix non-quota posted on this forum.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I found it, the immigrant visa I mentioned:

Look at the date on it. Those days are long long gone.

You have to apply for permanent residency and they are isused when applied for as part of getting a re-entry permit for it.

Info for permanent residency can be found in this topic.

Quite confusing since this book which documents a permanent residency permit uses the English sub title "Certificate of Residence" while there is also a "Residence Certificate" which anyone with a valid permission to stay can get which only shows where one is living and grants no permanent residency at all.
