Agreed,, but I get the impression motor cycles inthailand are for the cheapcharlies with the inevitable conclusions. That includes farm hands to expats.

I'd say that's not conclusive. Many ride motorcycles because cars cannot get you from point a-b in reasonable time. Of course that means motorcyclists  break all the laws to achieve this.

Sheesh, not nice and not nice to pontificate about how perfect you are either..

This poor woman, wherever she is from will not be able to salvage that leg. A lot of people in Thailand do not ride motorcycles out of choice but out of necessity and it doesn't matter what any of you say about how brilliant a rider you are, or how togged up you are, you only have 2 wheels on the road surface and when the time comes you cannot stop as fast as 4, nor do you have airbags, post collision technology, a seat belt or any other of the safety measures built into cars. A little sympathy would be more in order.

"A lot of people in Thailand do not ride motorcycles out of choice but out of necessity" - and that "necessity" is magnified on Phuket, due to the public transport issue here, thus, Phuket is among the most dangerous places to be on the road, in the world.

Whilst the focus is often on the death toll here, these catastrophic and life changing injuries are overlooked on the statistics here, which, if added to the stats, would show an even bleaker picture of Phuket road use.

I went past this accident not long after it happened. Fortunately emergency vehicles stopped me getting the full picture.

I believe the victim was a Thai lady, not a tourist nor a hero expat bike rider.

Looking at the pics the crappy old pickup had a homemade bumper made of a solid piece of steel.

The extent of the injury can be blamed on this modification.

If you look that bumper is a drawbar for a trailer, the usual, countrywide Thai design, guy near me makes them, no proper ball hitches here in Thailand.

Hope she makes a recovery.

Apologies for totally off topic, but is TV going to report the news about the four kids that 'fell' off a balcony which was all over the news this evening?  Some strange stuff going down with the family live on national TV, too.  Seems like luk kreung kids with possibly Swiss dad.

He is not jumping to conclusions. Just stating what many times are a facts. Never wrote anything about that this case was exactly as the circumstances stated.
Regardless of if she have an insurance or not, it´s pure madness to drive in to the rear of a pick up or any other veichle. As you clearly can see, she is not wearing appropriate gear for riding a motorcycle. When you ride a motorbike in a foreign country, you will need to have experience and really look out for yourself, which lokks like she didn´t do at all.

It is a certain difference between the term motorcyckle and a motorbike. In Thailand a motorbike is a smaller and less powerful machine than a motorcycle and she most likely drove a motorbike dressed like everyone else in Thailand driving a motorbike...

Also good to know that its only in a foreign country you need experience and really look out for yourself....

Wow! Are we down to semantics? Really? Try search motorbike on Google.

A motorcycle, often called a bike, motorbike, or cycle, is a two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of different purposes: long distance travel, commuting, ... Wikipedia

For your information it is the same. A motorcycle is almost always something that starts with 125 cc and goes up in every country. In Thailand and Asia it usually starts with 100 cc. Everything under that is usuallt called moped or EU-moped in the western world up to around 60 cc.

Okey, if wearing a gear or not, is really irrelevant in this case. Still overly degenerated and stupid to drive into the back of any veichle.

That has been reported, check either Bangkok or Thai news. This is the Phuket forum.
