BANGKOK — Football fans in Thailand will be watching the World Cup for free this year, officials said Thursday.

The Sports Authority of Thailand announced Thursday that public TV channels would retransmit the 2018 football FIFA World Cup for free, after the government cooperated with the private sector to secure the event’s broadcasting rights.

So not live broadcasts then?

The deal seems to be a bit secretive, but it looks like 1.4 Billion Baht was coughed up by various/sundry private enterprises: King Power Group, CP, Thai Beverage, Kasikorn Bank, Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), Gulf Energy Development, PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC), Bangchak Corporation and Carabao Dang.

A "government" enterprise was involved but had to pull out at the last moment as it "might look bad" using public funds, and maybe AIS stepped up?

There seems to be some continuing "negotiation" re: broadcast outlets, not limited to True, Amarin TV, Royal Thai Army TV (Ch. 5). My guess is that AIS might get mobile streaming rights, or maybe via their Fiber network?

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon seems to have pulled this deal together.
