Four Thai/Swiss children fall from fourth floor of flats - one is dead, three seriously injured

Hua Mark police were called to a set of apartment rooms at the end of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 34 in Bangkok early this morning after four young children fell from the fourth floor.

 

The children are Thai/Swiss with the Thai mother having split up with the Swiss father four years ago.

 

All the children have the surname Niran-Borel. The mother was out at work when the children fell.

 

At the scene police and medics saw boys Luca, 11 and Khanatcha, 5 and girls Pamela, 10 and Chanida, 7 on the ground. They were surrounded by broken plates and cups and an awning was damaged.

 

All the children were rushed to two hospitals. The five year old boy died in Ramkhamhaeng Hospital from a head wound.

 

Luca and Chanida are critical and unconscious in ICU.

 

Pamela broke her leg and is now said to be stable.

 

Police inspected their rooms on the fourth floor. A wooden platform constructed on a balcony had come loose.

 

The platform extending two feet over a back balcony was used to drain cups and plates after washing.

 

It looks like the children were sitting on the platform and a bolt gave way as it was unable to take their weight.

 

The children fell down at 1.30 am this morning.

 

Their grandfather Eet Prakaikaew, 68, said that he lived there with his wife and his daughter who is the mother of the children. She had gone to work and would not be back until morning.

 

Eet and his wife had locked up and gone to bed in another room thinking that the children were settled down for the night.

 

The next thing he knew was that ambulances had arrived and the children were all lying on the ground injured from the fall.

 

He said that his daughter had split up with the father of the children - a Swiss national - four years ago.

 

Neighbors told Thai Rath that the children were good kids who went to school and did their chores. They said that the family lived in hardship with the mother having to work at night to support everyone.

 

The authorities are paying for the hospital bills as investigations continue.

The woman was working late at night. I wonder, perhaps she was a nurse, or paramedic, or  taxi driver or security guard or waitress, or that job we are all thinking of, but are too polite to mention..

 

Appreciably her  type of job should not prejudice our views on the  incident, but it does cause one to ask if the father was supporting these kids, or had abandoned the family or if the woman had blocked the man from the kids etc.. Whatever the scenario, it does  put to  the test the claims of the farang men who say they lose everything to their ex spouses. Doesn't look like she was living the good life if the whole family was crammed into a low end apartment block.

The story said and darksidedog quoted it, that the family lived in hardship with the mother having to work at night to support everyone. If the father was paying maintenance for the kids, do you really think she would be in such a position?

We dont know their circumstances (the story never elaborated). But interesting enough, seems like another open/shut case from TVF jury [emoji44] Guess my work is done here.

Plenty of Thai ladies who have money problems.

Some generously funded by foreigners.

Drugs, gambling, loan sharks, grabby families ....... pointless to make assumptions.

 

Shame the children were hurt.

But it's not as if they were home alone, grandpa was watching them so his fault (if anyone's).

If the father (I am assuming) paid the mother support for the kids, perhaps one kid would be alive and the others not in ICU.

 

Regardless of divorces or separations, all dad's have an obligation to support their kids, regardless of circumstances.

 

Both the mother and father will now suffer for the rest of their lives, the grandparents must equally feel responsible.

 

Sad story indeed.

 

I have always told my Mrs if we ever split up that I would support the kids, as I wouldn't want her to work, kids need a full time mum.

You can't blame the grandpa, I have 4 kids, their grandparents, aunties, cousins are all within coo-ee of our place, and we never leave our kids with anyone, our kids, our responsibility, that said, she obviously was not in our position and had to rely on grandpa and or grandma, its a way of life here and kids will be kids.

 

I think education also plays a huge role here, as we are constantly ear bashing our kids, don't put your finger in this or you will die, don't leave water on the floor that has spilt from your cup as someone will slip over and get hurt, don't leave the front gate open because your sister could go out and get hit by a car, and the list goes on repeated 24/7, one hopes in the end, it gets through, some do, some don't, but again, its our responsibility, and I am not Thai bashing, but there is a major void when it comes to educating, guiding and preparing their kids IMO.

 

We cannot avoid kids getting killed by accidents, but we can get them to think by making them aware and to become thinkers, sure it takes time and is a hassle at times playing the same record over and over and over, but how much is your kids life worth.

 

I feel for all concerned here, bloody tragic and I reckon it could have been avoided if they weren't so relaxed with their kids, talking about the majority, as I cannot assume what these kids had been told about going out onto the balcony, which would have been a no go zone in our household !

(Another) sad, tragic story.     Hopefully the absent Swiss father can be contacted for assistance.    Since they, the children, are Swiss citizens I wonder if the Swiss embassy would have any interest in helping the family?

Don't you think that there are plenty of Filipino, African, European, American, etc...women with money problems? 

 

    There's hardly anybody to blame, accidents happen from time to time. 

 

  Mom can be a night nurse, or a prostitute, both needed occupations.

Bangkok boy, 5, killed, siblings hurt as apartment balcony gives way

A five-year-old boy was killed and his three siblings were seriously injured early Tuesday morning when a section of the balcony of their family’s fourth-floor apartment in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district collapsed.

 

Hua Mark police and rescue workers summoned at 1.30am found the four Thai-Swiss siblings on the ground outside the five-storey Kesaree Apartment building on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 34 amid shards of broken dishes. 

 

Khanatcha Niran Borell, 5, died from a head injury at Ram Khamhaeng Hospital, deputy inspector Pol Lieutenant Ratchanon Pengmuen said. 

 

Luca Niran Borell, 11, and Chanida Niran Borell, 7, were in the same hospital’s ICU ward and at press time had still not regained consciousness.

 

Pamela Niran Borell, 10, was treated for a broken leg at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital.

 

Police found that the balcony of the apartment where the children lived with their grandparents and Thai mother had been extended with wooden planks by two feet. The fastenings had come loose.

 

The extension was designed to store dishes, but police suspect the children were sitting or standing on it or near it when it gave way.

 

The grandfather, Id Prakaikaew, 68, said his daughter separated from her Swiss husband four years ago and rented the apartment. He and his wife lived there to help mind the kids overnight while she worked. 

 

The children were asleep when Id and the grandmother retired for the night, only to be awakened by a siren. Id said they were heartbroken to see the children lying injured on the ground below.

 

Neighbours said the four were good children who studied hard and helped with chores as the family struggled to make ends meet. They appealed for state agencies to help cover the family’s medical bills.

Do not blame her Ex-Husband for all the misery in her life. It’s a tragedy for all. Is the Swiss the father of all 4 children is another question.

Balconies in Thailand are death traps waiting to happen.  I've been in some condos and apartments in Chiang Mai where the balcony didn't even come up to my waist, and I'm only 174cm

It's easy to blame people, but we all know that Thais generally do not have the best attitude to health and safety or preventable accidents.

 

Even with money for the kids, the woman would still have to take care of her parents and we have no idea how much the father even earns. The grandparents thought the kids were in bed, they snuck out and played on the unsafe balcony.

 

The mum could have been at home, the balcony could have been locked, the kids could have known not to play on the balcony, the grandparents could have locked the kids in their room.

 

Many steps in this could have avoided it, but it is what it is. Kids can do stupid things sometimes and TIT so those stupid things are made even more dangerous. Would be good if people learned from this, but, TIT.

Dont believe anyone is or should be blaming the swiss guy.

He and his wife must be beside themselves with unimaginable grief.

Whenever there is a fall from a high rise we seem to get a few ( not all  ) on here trying to blame the police or thai society. 

Let's take this and others for what they truly are...tragic accidents and nothing else.
