Popular Post Frank James
Episode 2 of Billions is available. This is shaping up to be an excellent series with some great acting. Just watched ep. 2. It's a pretty good show, with lots of unpleasant people from both sides of the law trying to get over on each other. But, like a lot of other offerings from Showtime network, the scripts lean too heavily on excessively graphic sex, and vulgar language. The story could stand on its own without these overly nasty touches. Such as making a really foul, unnecessary reference to Catherine the Great and horses, at a staff meeting. Lazy writing, done for cheap laughs. And here's that little rat David Costabile popping up again as a major cast member. He always plays a guy you love to hate, on this, on Suits, and on Breaking Bad. Jesse gave him what he had coming on that one. I'll keep watching, but I know this would have been a much better show if done on HBO. SEVEN, so far.
eldragon
IMO, the best of Tarantino's films for many years - which is not saying a lot. His first few films were great, but it has been mostly downhill ever since. I enjoyed "The Hateful Eight" but , like most Tarrantino films, it was way over the top. Personally, I don't think I was even close to being anything great. I thought Jango was really good with the exception of the over the top ending, but have not liked any of his more recent films. Hateful Eight was garbage, imo. I didn't care about any of the characters and most of the twists felt (or were) telegraphed.

Frank James
45 Years I made it all the way through this film in one sitting, but it seemed like 45 years had actually passed by the end. All that kept me hanging on was looking at the eternally lovely Charlotte Rampling. All that serenity and wisdom in her face, and seems not to have gained an ounce of fat in her whole career. This film was entirely too real and "lifelike." Nothing much "happens", although the slight promise that something will eventually come of these dangling threads keep one hanging on. I kept crying out EDITOR, EDITOR! Charlotte walks the dog. Several times. They go to town. Several times. A secret from the past comes to light, threatens to blow up the marriage. Or maybe not. Etc. Young people deeply in love with each other, contemplating marriage, might call off the wedding after seeing this. If this is how things get, after four decades together, is it really worth it? SEVEN, because I love Charlotte so.

Popular Post Frank James
Best of Enemies (2015) What a treat, to ride the Time Machine back to the very troubled year of 1968, when the struggling ABC TV network hired prominent East Coast celebrity intellectuals Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley to appear on their truncated 90 minute non-”gavel-to-gavel” productions of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. The idea was to add some zap to the dull coverage, by having these two polar opposites tear away at each other in what were billed as “debates.” Buckley, an all time grand master at the art of true debate, would be the first to admit that these exchanges were not debates in any sense of the word. It was verbal sparring and political theater of the best kind, and these two made history doing it. Both men have left us now, but I would love to hear their thoughts on the current crop of candidates for president (both parties), and what are being billed as “debates” today. It was such a pleasure to hear both men hold forth with their own particular slant, each a master of the English language. The points they fought over, such as the emergence of an American Empire (Vidal's major theme), and the decline of public and private “morals” (Buckley's specialty), are still being knocked around today, albeit by “talking heads” of much dimmer intellect. If you are a Gore Vidal fan, as I am, also look up the excellent documentary “The United States of Amnesia.” I always respected Mr. Buckley as a true original thinker, and an excellent champion of his conservative point of view. His PBS series of over 30 years, “Firing Line”, was always reliable for lively jousts between WFB and his often controversial guests. I can see him now, his face twitching, making notes on the ever-present clipboard, straining to pounce. Who can ever fill their shoes? Frank James
Room (2015) I can't describe this film without "spoiling", so I'll just say...it was PAINFUL to watch. I stayed with it only to see if the situation would improve for the principals. We read of bizarre cruelties like this every day, so it wasn't as if it were far fetched at all. Original, Suspenseful, Tragic, Well Acted, Worthwhile, but God was I glad to see it end! NINE Run Jack, RUN!

Either way, fantastic audience rate for the German ZDF at the time (ZDF is not a private but a public service television station). with subtitles: Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter - Part 1 Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter - Part 2 Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter - Part 3
Popular Post jope
I was really looking forward to Baskets but I found the pilot a bit disappointing. Zach Galifianakis plays a loser who wants to be a "French Clown" (in other words: an artist instead of a comedian). It had some amusing moments and I will probably stick to it. Nevertheless, I somehow expected something more graphic and blunt. We'll see...

In AUstralia it shows as 'Border Security' I always reckon the people get off easy on that show... Yeah, you can bring in a pickled pigs head and a couple of Peking ducks from China, say you didn't understand the customs declaration, and you're home free. Be honest like I stupidly was and declare that I had a half pack of ciggies more than allowed, and get asked to pay duty on the whole 200 (carton of 10 packs), which came to over A$70. Told them to keep the lot and catch the real drug smugglers, who were probably sauntering through with a suitcase full of smack while they were wasting time with me. I detest the smug bastards, especially those working at airports in Oz.
