Savannakhet nightlife

Yeah, If you want to hit the ground running I would suggest a totally different country. Not even Vientiane would do that for you.
Savannakhet Nightlife is non-existing. You will find a lot of restaurants, and a couple of café. Lin´s Café have a pool table, but not much people there as in all other places.
At the square, where you find the food night market, you will also find 2-3 beer places. There you can find some people, but when I´ve been there it´s mostly the locals drinking.

There is a night club attached to one of the large hotels, pretty good live music but totally straight. You should be aware Laos girls are forbidden BY LAW from fraternising with foreigners.

Not much to see evenings. The night market is nice, there's a nice trendy restaurant, not far from Lin's cafe.
Good burgers at Lin's cafe by the way.
Also a night club by the Hoong Thong hotel. Nice music, but don't expect to pick up girls there, it's really a soft ambient.

What a country?? Fair enough, it is their country, and up to them to make their own laws, but to say anything is only illegal for foreigners and not for their own people is taking the piss.

The best thing any normal foreigner can do where Laos is concerned, is go and get your visa, and then get back out as soon as you can. Screw them:post-4641-1156693976:

Vietnam has the same laws. Theyre about as serious at enforcing them as Thailands prostitution laws

Does Vietnam have the same laws ?

Is it illegal for Vietnamese to have a sexual relationship with a foreigner whom she isnt married to ?

And do the Vietnamese authoritiessomtmesenter hotel rooms to check ?

Sure <deleted> do. Been there many times. Infact most of the hotels in Saigon bar a few will not allow guests. This has lightened up over the last few years with the growing importance of tourism.
And by the way...is the law really so cut and dried as a foreigner cant have sex with a Laos national...or we talking prostitution.

I'm going in ten days for visa

Anybody been to the Savan Vegas ?

Been there once, quite nice rooms.
It's a casino so everything is opened 24h a day.
No view to the outside though, all rooms have view only to the casino, and nothing to see in the casino's vicinity.
It's also a bit out of town if you're doing a visa run, nothing tragic though.
But if you want to go downtown Savannakhet evenings, then it's quite far.

Anyone expecting the same standards they may have experienced at hotels attached to casinos in the US, Europe or Australia will be disappointed. This is a third-rate operation in a third world country. Both the standard of construction and service are poor.

My problems began before my wife and I even arrived at the property. We used the hotel shuttle service from the Thai side of the border, but were abandoned on the Laos side while I took a few minutes to collect a visa (Thais get their documentation on the Thai side, foreign visitors on the Lao side). The shuttle simply left. Someone who appeared to work for the hotel then called the hotel and told us a car would be sent, but later pointed to a distant shuttle bus and directed us there. There was no driver in evidence so we used a tuk tuk taxi instead.

The hotel gave us vouchers for buffet breakfast for two days even though we were only staying one night, and as it was too late for breakfast that day they said we could use the voucher for lunch. This was not correct. We then had to change rooms because the toilet seat was very loose and the lid hit my back when I sat, and the light control for the bedside lamps didn’t work. There was no way to dim or turn them off. The staff solution was to burn their hand in unscrewing them. I declined to do the same. In the second room, the bathroom sink leaked underneath.

The floor included biscuit crumbs and an abandoned capsule of contact lens solution, and many areas of the corridor carpet were frayed and/or had been repaired. We stayed at the hotel in December for a wedding party and the room we had then was also sub-standard.

I went to a cafe on the casino floor and tried to order a latte. No milk. Then I ordered a cheese and ham croissant and after 15 minutes I received a salad and ham croissant instead. No cheese, but they didn’t tell me that and just gave me a substitute. At lunch, my dish took nearly 30 minutes to arrive and my wife’s simple noodle dish took nearly 40 minutes. Yet we were their only customers. How could they possibly cope with a full restaurant.

I am a personal friend of one of the management team and outlined the problems to him. He suspected that we were abandoned at the border as there was another couple in the shuttle who may have been VIP visitors who demanded the driver leave us as they didn’t want to wait. That seems feasible. The hotel manager was sympathetic to our problems and offered us free lunch and dinner...

I usually stay at the Avalon hotel, about 1 km from the consulate.
Nice little restaurant attached to it, nothing amazing but clean food at least (stay away from burgers though)
You might want to ask for a room not close to the lift, as it might be a nuisance if you're a light sleeper.

Hoong Thong hotel is also quite nice, but make sure you get one of the new rooms, I think they are in the B Wing, cost a bit more, but totally worth it.

Next to this hotel, nice restaurants, along Mekong, a night club just in front. Used to be close to the old consulate, not anymore. Now like 3 kms away from the new one

Dao Savanh hotel, one of the best hotels in town, but bit more expensive.
