A male driver and his female passenger were killed when their speeding car crashed into a power pole on a road island in Nakhon Pathom and caught fire early on Monday.

The accident happened at 1 am on Phetkasem road at a u-turn spot in front of Wat Lad Yapraek in Tambon Sa Krathiam, Muang district.

The accident caused a major traffic jam with cars backing up on that section of Phetkasem road for about two kilometres.

Firefighters took about 20 minutes to put out the fire and found two charred bodies in the car, aToyota Camry.

Chinchote Wainam, 30, was found in the driver's seat next to Jiraporn Tongfa, 20, in the front passenger seat.

Police said the speedometer was stuck at 180 kilometres per hour and the dashcam recorded the woman passenger screaming before the crash, when the cam switched off.

The car’s GPS log showed that it was travelling from Ratchaburi to Bangkok.

  • Sorry but zero sympathy. Thankfully nobody else was involved with this moronic act of insanity.

  • Probably just saw the movie Fast and furious, in their case fast and stupid... anyone, who disregard others safety, never mind thiers, deserves what is coming to them...

  • Driving skills are not great in Thailand, would be nearer the point.

I am reminded of a book, Unsafe At Any Speed (written by Ralph Nader - in the 60's) about the designed-in dangers of American automobiles.

In Thailand (but not solely), 'Unsafe At Any Speed' would be applicable to many drivers and riders in the Kingdom! This latest crash is a prime example of this.

Hiw the dashcam footage made it through a 180kph collision and 20 minute fire is astounding.

RIP to the poor lady, thankfully nobody else got tangled up in the mess.

I was being driven around Phuket recently by my partners 20yo son, the car always smelled of burning brakes. seems he uses the brake pedal as a foot rest.

Recently drove from Udon Thani to Pattaya with the family, averaging 100km-120km and on occasion would see someone fly by at around 150km-160km, really I cannot see the need to go over 100km-120km, just sit back, put on your cruise control, some nice music and enjoy the drive, stopping every two hours for a coffee and a bite to eat.

Yup, fall off your pushbike at 10kph without a suitable crash helmet and hit your head (temple) on solid concrete e.g. guttering and your gone!

From Buffalo to Vigo.

A quantum leap their primeval Cro-Magnon brains cannot deal with.

No sympathy whatsoever for the driver.

Poor women probably had no choice.....I have full sympathy for her at least.

Natural Selection at work- at least he won't put any more lives at risk.

Sympathy for the passenger though.

As Sir Stirling Moss said,  It's not speed that kills, it's lack of driver ability.

And he wasn't talking about Thailand.

The speedometer stuck at 180kmh, but it could have been the impact which swing the 'needle' round that far before it stuck.

I'm not sure the dash-cam recorded the speed (sone do, some don't).

Nevertheless, more wasteful loss of life and the loss of an innocent passenger.

Luckily, no other innocents were involved which tragically is sometimes the case.

150 mph x Thai driver x Thai road = death for certain.

Cars computer will tell the exact speed.

Tell me about it. I let my wifes cousin take my car from a drive because he's been driving around in a beat up hilux for the past 30 years.

When changing gears he went 1-3-5. I asked him why he did that and he replied that he thought it was the same as his gearbox.

Still haven't figured that one out.

I went from udon thani to krabi for new year.3 days and two nights of hotels each way.i actually enjoyed it.all the traffic was heading north on my way south and again heading home the traffic was heading south.not one close call but that's because 95%of the traffic were on the other side of the road.

Considering that everybody seems to always be in such a bloody (and dangerous!) hurry as soon as they're behind the wheel, why are Thai people categorically one hour late for appointments?

Only the best Thai drivers should be allowed to drive a car.

1 AM, what could be involved?

Charred body, probably difficult to impossible to find out the alcohol level?

Or just not worth the effort.

The sd card inside dash cam survived the crash. RIP to the couple but a Camry surely can't do 180kmh on a normal road.

Where do you have that from?

Bet it can.

The biggest motor sold in Thailand is a 2.5 liter, 133 kW (188 PS/HP).

Max speed is never shown in Thai brochures (maybe even forbidden?).

Wiki says 210 km/h for the 2.5 liter with 6 speed auto.

No idea why the poster choose this number.

180 km/h = 112 mph.

The faster you travel means less time exposed to the danger of driving?

You must take a different route than me, I do this drive regularly, have tried to use cruise control on occasion but just don't feel comfortable with it or the flow of traffic makes it impossible to use! I do use the speed "limiter" driving through KK, as many cameras as they have, not worth trying to exceed!

A Toyota Camry will not do 180 kph.

Ok I got my figures wrong 180 kph= 112 mph.its great having you Steven the 'corrector' on hand.i promise I won't do it again.now go rattle someone else's knuckles with your cane.

Excessive(*) speed kills for sure (same-same but very different, when the drivers are more skilled, ...and responsible, than original Borneo inhabitants, speed does not necessarily kill...).

(*)But let me guess, reading your post..., if 100 to 120 is your choice, no prob for me, but DO KEEP LEFT then on roads where a higher limit would be authorised, OK with you, ...instead of voluntarily brake off or block faster drivers exercicing their freedom/right to do so, like too many (in most countries), or would you maybe flash your headlights too on top of it?
