Police in Trang on Sunday night shot and wounded a 20-year-old man accused of attempting to kill his mother. An officer was also wounded.

Following a report of a man threatening his mother with a gun, about 100 police officers and local administrative officials had surrounded a house in Wang Wiset district belonging to the man’s elder sister, where he was taking refuge.

When police using a megaphone failed to persuade Thaweechai Chotepan to surrender, they rushed the house, only for the man to open fire, wounding Pol Captain Prapan Damnoenkan, 57, in the arm.

The officers withdrew and the man’s uncle spent 20 minutes trying to make him give up, to no avail.

Minutes later, at 11pm, Thaweechai emerged from the house trying to shoot his way to freedom, sending police and reporters scattering, but was brought down by a police bullet.

Thaweechai was taken to Trang Hospital with a wound described as serious.
