Khaosod Unearths Dog Mass Grave At Govt Site

An image Monday shows parts of dog corpses sticking out in a pit near the Nakhon Phanom Quarantine Station.

 

NAKHON PHANOM — A mass grave of dogs and cats was discovered Monday outside a government-run animal facility.

 

Tipped about its existence, a Khaosod reporter found more than 10 pits of various sizes which excavators had dug into the ground about 50 meters away from the Nakhon Phanom Quarantine Station.

I guess they have to get rid of them somewhere. Think these mass graves are a perfect solution, or maybe they should have been left to smell in the quarantine station as well as in the streets.
Just face it! We can´t save them all, they are just to many.

Wow, this is truly dreadful. Those flat out denials made last weekend certainly rang very hollow at the time. It appears the issue of animal welfare in this country is one that only a small percentage of the population truly grasp.

I mean wher are all these animals going to go if (not when) they are vaccinated and certified to be free of disease? It seems there is absolutely no system in place, and now the pits have been discovered those people running this facility have been rumbled and are very unlikely to have a plan B

No, if a lot of dogs and cats have died then a large burial pit is the obvious way to dispose of the remains, although not as haphazardly as these photographs suggest.

 

The issue is that those in charge appear to deny that a lot of animals have died, whilst all the evidence suggests that they are being kept in appalling conditions and the numbers simply do not add up. As with so many other activities here, it rather appears that the available funds have been diverted...

A couple of thousand down; a couple of million still to go before Thailand joins civilised countries in curbing the spread of diseases; road deaths; mutilations all caused by stray dogs.

Yeah, I'm an animal lover, and yeah, I understand that for many people cats and dogs come low on the list of prorities, but there is something particularly disquieting and abhorrent about this whole scenario, not just the secret mass grave but the horrendous treatment of the animals beforehand, the parallels are just too powerful. I hesitate to say it myself for fear of being accused of belittling human suffering, so I'll let a great thinker say it for me:

 

 

OK, he's talking about a slaughterhouse but you get my gist I hope. And just to be clear, I'm not against burying animals in a mass grave as such, or even humanely euthanising them if the only alternative is needless suffering.

For soi dogs,  I LIKE it!

 

Name them Doghau, Barkingwald, Slobberbor, Arfschwitz!

The real problem is even if many of the dogs were disease free before they were dumped in the shelter, once they were locked in overcrowded pens with other infected animals it would of been all to late. The Thais wouldn't have gone through any proper quarantine procedures nor thought about potentially saving any of these dogs. Terrible death.

I feel for the guys ... all these years they comfortably devided the budget dedicated to animals amongst themselves and suddenly all these cats and dogs are being dumped off! Well surely money cannot be re-diverted for such lost cause as it would mean a heavy burden on the private household budgets of the officials and afterall it wasn't their fault.

You should not bury dead animals like that, they need to be incinerated to stop any possible infectious disease they are carrying (what they were killed for). I have been to farms that have real incinerators from the size that accommodate from 1hen up to the size that would take a whole cow without a problem, and it's all just in case they get any animal that die as they need to stop the disease from spreading among the other animals. And also if you incinerate you usually have very high temperature so it goes quickly and also produce less pouting agents.

The real question is more like how were they killed ? A number probably because they were ill , not fed and left to die a slow death. But others brutally slaughtered , like they do with farm animals or worse , because they wanted to clean up the place for inspection?

I think we can all remember the horrific pictures of the mass murder of cows & sheep with alledged BSE in the UK.

At least we now know that Soi Dogs were right in their assessment, and good to hear that the authorities have finally allowed Soi Dog vets into the compound.
