Lightning strike burns down school storage building causing costly damage

KHON KAEN, 15th May 2018 (NNT) – A fire at a school in Khon Kaen’s Ranuan district caused by a lightning bolt has resulted in damage estimated at over 5 million baht. 

A heavy rainstorm set off the fire at the storage building of Srikranuan Wittayakhom School in Kranuan district of Khon Kaen yesterday after the building was struck by lightning. Municipal firefighters and rescue workers were assembled to put out the fire during the storm. 

The storage building in the west of the school held computers, documents, musical instruments and other valuables, which were all destroyed by the 40 minute blaze. Damage has been estimated at over 5 million baht. 

Teachers at the school reported seeing three different lightning strikes hit the building before a fire rapidly spread throughout it. The ongoing storm slowed efforts to assess the situation at first and allowed the fire to get out of hand before authorities could address the situation.
