Phuket’s haphazard lifeguard coverage flamed, comprehensive plan blanked

Daren Jenner presents the plan for comprehensive lifeguard coverage at all Phuket’s major tourist beaches to Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong at the Governor’s House last Monday (May 14).

PHUKET: The continuing fragmented state of lifeguard coverage at Phuket’s beaches has come under harsh criticism for failing to provide a framework that will ensure killed lifeguards will remain on our beaches, while a comprehensive plan to have trained, professional lifeguards patrolling Phuket’s beaches has fallen on deaf ears.

The comprehensive plan to have over 220 freshly trained and internationally certified ocean lifeguards hired full time to ensure their skills are maintained, with no threat of annual lapses as while government contracts are renewed, was presented to Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong on May 14 – a fact that was omitted during the Governor Meets The Press meeting held at Provincial Hall yesterday (May 21).

As such, until now the public has been unaware that the plan was presented.

So the people at the meeting were more interested in looking at their mobiles and making jokes rather than listen to what was being said . Way to show your interest in saving lives and showing respect to the speaker

I am assuming that is supposed to read skilled, rather than killed. Dead Lifeguards are not very good at the job.

Non issue... they will be ready to swim into action come high season.

Neither re the live ones apparently !

Unfortunately these "officials" are more concerned about saving face and lining their pockets than the image of Phuket and safety of it's tourists.

Says it all when the guy in charge sends his deputy to take the heat and give some gibberish answers as to why they have failed so bad.

BTW, did we ever get an explanation about why a company from Bangkok with no known experience gets the contract..............................?

No! And the guy giving the presentation was summoned by the Governor after he presented a petition to the US Embassy and Chinese Embassy to issue a travel waring about Phuket. They should employ ISLA Certified lifeguards. My nephew was an instructor with them and has visited several countries certifying local lifeguards. They were here in Phuket in the fall of last year and certified over 200. Many remain un-hired!  All we have is a load of BS and no one with a clue running "program." I know... TIT! The most inept rise to the top.
