Riding madness: a frightening follow up

After the motorbike accident, described in the previous thread, Grandpa was taken to the main public hospital in Sisaket city, while the other guy was taken to the local (amphoe) hospital.

While grandpa was diagnosed with multiple fractures in the face, lower jaw, shoulder and arm, the other guy was supposedly suffering from superficial injuries and treated accordingly, that is with high doses of the ubiquitous paracetamol.

Less than three days later, where are we?

Well...the situation is not pretty I am afraid.

Let's start with the other guy.

After a couple of days of intensive treatment with paracetamol, it was discovered that the guy couldn't stand on his feet, and that his spine had probably badly suffered in the accident.

His panicked family had him immediately transferred to Sisaket main hospital, where the situation was considered serious enough to have him transferred to Ubon main hospital, where he stays now.

I prefer not to think about what may come...

Meanwhile, believe it or not, grandpa is back home!

Not rockn'rollin' mind you, but "hospitalized" at home because it's cheaper for the state!

I just visited him, and I was not impressed...at least not favorably...

Here we have a guy totally immobilized, probably for weeks, who cannot sit, eat and s..t, surrounded by a bunch of well meaning yet totally ignorant farmers supposed to take care of him!

When I raised this issue with my wife, notably the s..t part, she said that it didn't matter, since in public hospitals it is family members who are required to take care of such chores!

What do we learn from all this?

Well, first it is better to avoid having a motorbike accident, while being drunk, wearing no helmet and riding on the wrong side of the road.

This may seem obvious, yet it is not for many villagers who prefer to look for other explanations for such bad luck.

Then, if you have an accident...and remain conscious...it is better to avoid being transported to a public hospital, especially a small local one...

Finally, if you are treated exclusively with paracetamol, it is better to either call your embassy, or start praying!

But, apart from that, everything's ok right?

another possibility is the other guy has compromised liver function (drinking can do it) and or continued to drink and take paracetamol thus causing more liver damage and associated problems and there are many and weakness and inability to stand are easily expleined

Thank you for your diagnoses, doctor. Would you be prepared to be an expert witness for the OP?

Paracetamol is the cure all medicine!

Here is another example:

Upcountry, it is current for non cautious farmers to lose a few phalanges while trying to hold on a rebellious cow with an inappropriate rope.

Even if it is "only" phalanges, it is still an amputation!

In the case of the grandma (villages are full of grandmas and grandpas) I witnessed, she was taken to the local (amphoe) hospital, where she spent one (1) night before being sent back home with a full bag of paracetamol!

They also use paracetamol to treat cancer, even though the results are not so good, considering the number of funerals taking place around...

Same up my way.

Even the local Thai used to joke about it.."Oh,they'll just give me some paracetamol and send me home.."

On the other hand they did endeavour to kill off my "uncle" with the most bizarre diagnosis (and truck load of medication) known to mortal man but I managed, with great difficulty,to put a stop to the nonsense...

depends on condition of distal appendage at time of hospital evaluation.

limited options? sometimes they demand pills so paracetamol might be safest ones to give.
