webfact
Police to introduce traffic offences points system FILE photo BANGKOK, 29 May 2018 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police plans to introduce a penalty point system to deal with traffic offences in an effort to improve road safety in Thailand. The assistant police chief, Pol. Lt. Gen. Natthorn Prohsunthorn, said efforts must be made to amend traffic laws, since the current penalties are considered lenient and do not make traffic offenders' driving habits better. Pol. Lt. Gen. Natthorn said police are in the process of linking traffic offences to a demerit point system, which authorities would consider when renewing a driver's license. He said it is unclear when the new system would be introduced. According to the assistant police chief, each driver would have a full 12 points. If all the points are deducted, the offenders would have their licenses suspended for 90 days. -- nnt 2018-05-29
ukrules
What will the penalty be for having no license, I heard this is a common issue ? This is all that matters. If it's immediate payment of say 10k Baht to the police station or something like a month in prison then it might stand a chance of working but if it's a small affordable 'minimum wage range amount' like 200-500 Baht 'tea money' then this will be as useless as everything else they do. They have a chance to fix things here if it's planned carefully. A definite step in the right direction.
ezzra
More police presence on the roads stopping and pulling over errant drivers and issuing fines on the spot will help a bit, but with many millions of drivers with either fake or expired license, and in many cases, outdated information on licenses and ID's, this going to be tough job to implement...
Popular Post colinneil
What good would a points system be? None what so ever, a large proportion of drivers would continue to drive, with or without a license. Driver gets stopped by police, no license, hands over some cash, then just carries on. 11
Popular Post Cadbury
A very original idea I don't say. I am guessing just about every civilised country in the world has this system of demerit points. It will be totally meaningless to Thai drivers. In fact they will probably believe the more points you accumulate the closer you get to winning a prize, or treat it as a race to see who can get the most points. 5

Doing it this way will suggests they can't purchase any existing software, so someone's about to get a big fat contract from the government. Popular Post canuckamuck
The thing about a points system is that you have to actually catch offenders first. And that doesn't mean seat belt and paper work offences. 2

Thailion
Cart before the horse...education is what is needed. Forget the old timers and rural drivers as they will never learn but start teaching the kids now and slowly things will turn. Most drivers now honestly don’t know how to drive. They study enough (or pay enough) to pass the test but they still have no idea how to drive.
Wiggy
This won’t work. It needs education. Most Thai drivers don’t even know when they’re doing something wrong.

What again? They trot out this proposal every 18 months or so, formulate a very poorly-thought-out plan to put it into action, discover that the various agencies involved flatly refuse to liaise with one another and chuck the whole thing in the bin within three weeks until the next group of senior traffic police go on an all-expenses-paid "inspection tour" to Europe or North America and rediscover that civilised nations have effective and functioning points scheme to punish repeat offenders and change their behaviour. And repeat. Checkpoints anyone? Preferably on a blind corner. (The Thai way of traffic policing)
graemeaylward
This would also need a National Drivers Licence Database that the plod at the checkpoint can access to check the driver at the roadside! I don't believe such a system exists at present. If there was one, they could then introduce ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras at strategic points and in Police cars! Oh wait a minute all police cars are too busy escorting local dignitaries around the place to observe, let alone enforce traffic laws!Sent from my Lenovo A3000-H using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
RichardColeman
Problem is a lot of Thais would be banned from driving before they got to work on day one of this in operation ! 1
Artisi
Allocate as any points as you want, issue as many infringement notices as deemed necessary, cancel licenses by the thousands, and guess what - nothing will change, those without any a licence won't be affected in any way and those with a license will just keep driving. Sounds like a well thought out plan to fail even before being implemented. Edited May 29, 2018 by Artisi
mercman24
THAI , no helmet, no licence, no insurance, 1 penalty point, FARANG no helmet 6 points 5000 baht fine, sounds about right lol
mercman24
well for a start the issue of the licence is a farce, Thais have no driving experience and are let lose on these lethal roads, see others doing stupid things daily and of course this will be the norm for them from then onwards, as witnessed by us who have roads sense, being taught to drive properly, only a few days ago i witnessed not one but 2 tour buses jump a red light crossing sukhumvit road. traffic who had the green light had to wait for these idiots to clear the junction, (the wait is 3 minutes)

Best one I have seen Col is when they pull over a motorbike rider with no license. Use to be 200 baht fine on the spot ( That is what stepdaughter told me because she got pulled up a few times no license ) But the silly part is when they pay the fine they are allowed to ride the bike home. I would say mission accomplished the cops are doing their job and getting tea money and the bike riders can still ride their bikes. And the circus goes on 1

Won't matter NCC if they use up 107 points they will still be driving their cars. It will just be turned into a big joke like the rest of the laws in Thailand are treated. Remember the law " No more riding in the back of pick-ups" Funny I must be on a different planet because they still do it here big time and no cops ever pull them up. But you right the Thai would think they are lucky numbers lol 1
