PHUKET: A 14-year-old student has escaped serious injury after the motorbike he was riding was struck by a tour bus in a small street in Chalong this morning.

Police and rescue workers were called to the scene, in Soi Yodsane 2, Chalong, at 9:25am.

Officers arrived to find a Bangkok-registered tour bus with Sri Nawanput Transport emblazoned on the side parked in the small street, with 14-year-old Tharakorn Sommathorn still under the bus just before the front right wheel.

14 year old on a racy looking m/bike - lunacy. Mind you those big coaches should not be using such small roads.

Edit ... just read the Gazette's account and the driver ran away leaving a passenger to reverse the bus off the boy's leg.

The guts of this story is not the fact the large bus was on a narrow Soi, it is the fact that what was a 14 year old doing riding a motor bike No drivers licence probably no motor bike licence hence no insurance. What were the parents thinking and of course the old chestnut what were the bloody cops doing?

15 or so years ago, we'd send a couple 12-14  year old kids down a short soi on a mini-bike to buy cold beer at the corner store.  Several times an evening.  The bike was low and slow enough so that if they crashed and dropped the beer, not all the bottles would break.  A good time was had by all.

Edit.

Just noticed it was Soi YodSane 2, not Soi YodSane 1 which goes through the village. My error.

Soi 2 has been widened to allow buses to go to the  gem tourist trap recently opened.
