Leaving Thailand with overstay - ticket to nearby country or home country?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I overstayed my visa and will leave Thailand from Bangkok airport.

I'd like to know if immigration require absolutely a ticket to home country, or is it enough for them if I just fly out to an other asian country?

Thank you for the info guys

Depends on the mood of the immigration officer on who you fall upon...

You can fly to anywhere you want to after paying the overstay fine on departure from the country.

Not correct info. They don't care where you are flying to when you clear your overstay at an airport.

To add: 1) How LONG (days) is the overstay, 2) do you plan to return to TH in the near future. UNDER a week to 2 weeks is usually a passport overstay stamp an a fine and 'out the door',  if a longer time you might end up having a meeting with a IO plus passport stamp and a fine.

I just sorted an 85 day over stay by leaving via nong Khai border and  paying the fine at the immigration at the border and passing straight into Laos . So if you haven’t already booked your flight and If your planing on returning to Thailand straight away I would leave via a border and  get a tourist visa from the Thai embassy in what ever country your planing on going to as they may be funny giving you a visa exempt (leaving by a border they can’t force you to go home as there’s obvs no airport to fly from

You do it border wise and you do risk being checked at road check points on the way there.

Airport is a safer bet.

That used to be my strong belief also, and I think it is still a good option. However, domestic flight to Udon (definitely safe) and minibus from Udon airport to Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai is possibly better if planning to get a visa in Vientiane. I have never heard of any Westerner being checked when using the minibus to the Friendship Bridge. Meanwhile, there is a small chance of a problem flying to Vientiane after an overstay in Thailand (albeit, recent reports suggest it is likely OK).

Re flying to Udon that would be a good option if you had any worries. Long time since I've used Poipet ( for obviuos reasons ) for 90 day out/in and have been stopped only twice in many trips, not sure what the result would be if on a fairly big overstay nowadays.

Well I stayed awake through the whole journey there and back and there was no police checks and my Thai gf said if they do stop the bus they won’t be interested in looking for my passport. There’s always a scare monger on these forums

I've never seen these checks at Nong Khai, but at borders to Cambodia. But they are mostly interested in Asian looking people. I would also consider the airport safer

No need to use the scare monger lable. Just make sure you don't get a random check by police before you leave for or get over the border. It has happened to quite a few in my 30 years in Thailand.

Penang will not issue a tourist visa if you have an overstay stamp.

I know a man who overstayed and is blacklisted for 1 year but since he turned himself in at the airport and paid the fine he was allowed to fly to Vietnam nd is now living there.
