One U.S. soldier killed in battle against militants in Somalia - U.S. official

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. commando was killed and four others were wounded on Friday when they came under fire in Somalia during an operation against al-Shabaab militants, the U.S. military said.

The U.S. special operations forces were fighting alongside about 800 troops from the Somali National Security Forces and Kenyan Defense Forces when they were attacked about 2:45 p.m. by mortars and small arms fire.

One local soldier was also wounded in the attack, the U.S. military said in a statement, without clarifying whether that fighter was part of the Somali or Kenyan armed forces.

Although one of the wounded Americans did not receive additional care after being treated in the field, the other three and the wounded local soldier were medically evacuated for follow-up care.

The troops had been on a mission to clear al-Shabaab from contested areas as well as villages the militants controlled, "and establish a permanent combat outpost" to expand the reach of the Somali state, the U.S. military's Africa Command said in a statement.

"The U.S. provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission," it said.

About 500 U.S. troops are deployed in Somalia.

Al-Shabaab is fighting to overthrow Somalia's central government and establish its own rule based on its interpretation of Islamic law.

Since being pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group has lost control of most of Somalia's cities and towns, but it retains a strong presence in regions outside the capital.

Militants or terrorist, I hope they also lost many in the battle,

the war on terrorism has many fronts in the world,

Somalia and Burkina Faso being just a couple in that region,

more money will be spent here and more innocent lives lost for

kebab's  ideology, sadly.

R.I.P.

Terrorists are those that oppose the corupt regime .

Military intervention : when 2 dogs fight.....a thirth bigger dog will come to help

killing the smallest dog .

Soldiers should stay in their country ,never intervene in other countries internal problems.

The more terrorists .....the less corrupt regimes.

terrorist = freedom fighter

Is a first on TV? Someone claiming Al-Shabaab, a fundamentalist  Islamist terror group, are 'freedom fighters'

Why isn't there a full UN force as opposed to US and African Union Missions in Somalia to assist1 the Somalian government security forces engaged in fighting Al-Shabaab militants to prevent from Somalia from becoming a failed state? A failed state is Iran's goal to create an Iranian satellite.

On March 27, 2018 the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia until 31 March 2019, as previously set out in resolution 2158 (2014). While the unanimous resolution commits to a comprehensive approach to security in Somalia, it seems less supportive of direct military intervention on behalf of the Somalian government than to non‑military approaches.

https://www.un.org/press/en/2018/sc13264.doc.htm

Those non-military approaches failed.

So it would seem the necessary legal mechanism is in place to expand UN role to an international peacekeeping force such as that used in Kosovo. What's the delay?

1There are a small contingent of Saudi and Turkish troops in Somalia serving as trainers.

When people are trying to make terrorists look better by calling them freedom fighters, I suspect these people are the ones who give money and support to those same Terrorists.. Just my opinion or course

Until there is war declared by US Congress or some war powers act engaged by the US President, no US soldiers have a right to be fighting in Somalia.

The Constitution does not empower the president to conduct military strikes against foreign governments whenever they would advance American national security interests with relatively low risk. https://www.lawfareblog.com/rip-congressional-war-power

US military strikes in Somalia are not against a foreign government (Federal Government of Somalia) but against insurgents opposed to the government. The US support of a nation's sovereignty is not against the US Constitution.

BS.

There's nothing saying terrorists are corrupt themselves or represent corrupted powers.

In the same way, it's quite possible for both governments and terrorists to be vile. That doesn't make terrorists into freedom fighters or turn them into some anti corruption squad.

How about this suggestion ?  Washington should not be sending it's own military staff to places like Somalia.

How about, Washington targets whatever group or groups who are against the enemy, and fund and support those groups ?  I mean, a bunch of black men who are locals in Somalia, they fight against the enemy and some of them get killed. Well, the newspapers back home are not going to make a big deal out of it. But you get our soldiers who get killed out there, well, that is a big deal. So, lets not have our own men out there.

How about you stop trolling? (fat chance).

Because it doesn't really matter what the US does - you'll find reason to fault it. Your concern trolling is all too obvious.
