LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Amal Clooney on Thursday paid unprecedented public tribute to her movie star husband George Clooney, calling him a gentleman, an amazing husband and father and the love of her life.

The human rights lawyer was addressing a star-studded lifetime achievement award ceremony in Hollywood for "Ocean's Eleven" star Clooney.

But she said it was easier for her "to address a court on behalf of detainees than to speak publicly, as I am doing for the first time tonight, about my husband."

"I met George when I was 35 and starting to become quite resigned to the idea that I would be a spinster. Then we met," Amal Clooney told the audience, packed with friends and A list stars like Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston, model Cindy Crawford and Diane Keaton.

"Five years later, he is the person who has my complete admiration and also the person whose smile makes me melt every time," she added.

Despite being one of the most celebrated couples in Hollywood after their 2014 marriage and the birth of twins a year ago, Amal and George Clooney rarely speak of their private life.

On Thursday, Clooney was the center of attention as an American Film Institute lifetime honoree. Friends ranging from former U.S.

President Barack Obama to Julia Roberts and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel spoke of his wit, charm, generosity and work for causes including refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan and victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

"He always looks better than me, does the whole gray hair thing better than me, may be more debonair than me," joked Obama, appearing by video. "He is a good man, a good friend, a good citizen, and an outstanding maker of films."

Clooney, 57, a producer, director, actor and double Oscar winner, made his name on the 1990s medical TV series "ER," before starring in movies ranging from comedies to thrillers and serious political dramas including "Up in the Air," "Syriana" and "Three Kings."

Julianna Margulies, his love interest on "ER," called him "the most genuine, most stellar human being and friend."

"And yes, he is a good kisser. Sorry!," she added.

Clooney said that before meeting Amal he didn't believe he could "have it all."

"I love this industry," he said, before signing off using the title of his 2005 journalism movie. "Good night, and good luck."

In March, Amal Clooney joined the legal team representing two Reuters reporters jailed in Myanmar who are accused of possessing secret government papers in what has become a landmark press freedom case.

Clooney has a short mans complex! He is an Elite off spring. Silver spoon in mouth. Speaks out of turn from Dollywood thinking people who actually have a brain will listen to his BS. Only the young and some old disenfranchised brain dead's will eat up this crap. He should stay in his field of producing unreality ( formerly know as Hollywood ) with the rest of the fake loosers. Just think the young kids think this is reality. Makes you feel really comfortable in our older age.

I have alot of admiration for Clooney. He has done alot with his wealth and celebrity. Alot of wealthy and famous people do not do much. But, he has used his status and wealth to try to make a difference.

George Clooney has told Hollywood Reporter that he plans to donate at least $21 million from the sale of his Casamigos tequila company to charity. The celebrity actor said in a lengthy interview published online on Wednesday that he and wife Amal will grant $1 million to the non-profit Southern Poverty Law Center and gift $20 million to their year-old foundation, the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center fights hate and bigotry in the United States and the Clooney Foundation battles similar issues worldwide.

That one donation is more money than the incredibly self absorbed Donald Trump has donated in his entire lifetime!

A self-described activist, he was staunchly against the war in Iraq, and has contributed to many charitable causes. Some may criticise his performance in adverts for Nespresso and Omega watches, but would you be more tolerant of this if you knew that he donated his fees for these adverts to charity? Seeing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, Clooney has been moved to support the area in any way he can. In 2012 he auctioned off a 2008 Telsa Roadster car (valued between $100,000-$150,000) the proceeds of which went to supporting causes in the region.

Other charitable acts have included paying $5million to setup a satellite above the war-torn area of Darfur to monitor the atrocities that have been taking place in the region. He raised $3million of this through charitable donations, including his advert fees, and simply gave the other $2million himself.
