I'm a Finnish citizen who has been living in Thailand for approximately 9 months in the past; working(on a holiday in Finland currently). I'm nearly fluent in the language, and my goal is to obtain the Thai citizenship one day.

The question is: Can I apply and obtain the permanent residency status; after studying in a university in Thailand for 3 years on a ED visa and being married to a Thai woman during the application.

I'm only asking this because, I could just get the Marriage visa to study on. And with that I could apply for the permanent residency status in 3 years. (Marriage visa would just cost more to me and even possibly postpone me enrolling to the university by 1 YEAR)

Anyone here got the PR status on ED visa?

Ok, seriously, the only way to get permanent resident status is to work three years here and pay tax. To start with...

The basic answer is no. You will need to be working with a work permit and paying taxes for 3 years on extension of stay,

If married to a Thai you can apply for citizenship without having permanent residency but you still have to be working and paying taxes for 3 years.

Hi! Thanks everyone for the answers:)

It got me confused many sources defined the requirement of PR status to only be a non-immigrant visa which is. But I guess there is a lot of conflicting info out there.

Wow, I'm surprised that I can already apply for a citizen without a PR status, after being married and working only 3 years straight! Thanks for the info I will put my lawyer on it when its relevant.

Since 2008 you can aplly for citizenship without the need to have PR for 5 years first. As for PR itself, there are many categories under which you could apply, but... We don't know anyone taken seriously let alone being granted one when applying under any other category than work.

I was granted PR under the "special circumstances" category 3 years ago. ?

If you can show that you have been a special benefit to Thailand.  For example in the medical, educational, scientific, law enforcement, etc.

You need to have a minister or secretary of the relevant government body to support your application.

I don't recommend this path, because of politics and ministers changing all the time.

You need to provide all kinds of proof to support your application.

I think I was put under much more scrutiny than average PR applicant.

Mine took 8 years to get approved.

Now we know 1 ?

Actually the same year I was applying 3-4 other persons were applying in the same category (special circumstances).  I am not sure if they ever got PR.   Unfortunately not everyone reports back to thaivisa so there may be a few in other categories too for example, the expert and investment categories getting PR each year that we don't know about. ?
