New Zealander accused of masterminding murder of Korean mom in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai police on Saturday arrested a New Zealander for allegedly masterminding the murder of his Korean mother by setting it up as quarrel between his wife and the old woman.

Brian Lee, 50, was arrested and charged with masterminding the murder of An Jung Ja, 76, at a house in the Mountain View village in Tambon San Phisua in Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Thursday.

He was being detained at the Mae Ping police station.

Earlier, Lee claimed his mother had a quarrel with her daughter-in-law, Park Songhee, who then stabbed her to death out of anger. Lee said his mother became angry at the speed of Park’s response to being called, and so grabbed her daughter-in-law and slammed her head against the wall and injuring her, before Park then stabbed her.

But after checking forensic evidence and security-camera footage, police concluded that Lee had lied about the quarrel and took part in the killing of his mother.

His wife was under police watch at Chiang Mai Hospital.

Police said Lee’s mother had several apartments and businesses in South Korea, and Lee had brought her to live with the couple in Chiang Mai six months ago.

Some kind of Mastermind! A "Grab" taxi for Granny  plus one way ticket to Seoul would have been easier I'd reckon.

Good grief. There's a blast from the past!!!

I believe it was a great little game I played as a young teenager in the early 70's if my memory is correct.

Made by Invicta of Leicester IIRC. The lady was a student picked out for the advert. The man I believe is deceased.

Lucky “KIWI” going to spend a long time on a diet of Whatever & Boiled Rice.

Doubt if they’ll send-out for “Fush ‘N Chups” for him.

But he will be allowed food deliveries into his prison if arranged by someone outside.  Pizzas/KFC/Mcdonalds can be delivered to prisoners as can Thai food.

I doubt "Brian" Lee is a Kiwi.. Just another foreigner that the NZ government handed out a passport to. It is possible though, it says his mother escaped from North Korea years ago. Our country does have a reputation for welcoming "refugees" with all kinds of backgrounds, including those linked to Osama Bin Laden. He may have grown up in New Zealand, but likely just another non-English speaking foreigner the government has handed a passport to if the bank balance fits the bill.

I wish they would refer to such people (in using those holding British, French and American passports under similar circumstances) as "New Zealander" etc, instead as "naturalised New Zealander" or "Korean born holding a NZ passport".

The reason I say this, is that attacks on parents are not something which would come naturally to most from NZ. I do not speak with my mother, and those that know it feel I am bad for this alone, I did not murder her. Then again, my last name is not Lee or Park.

He is a burden to society and likely not able to contribute productively to Thai Society, he clearly no longer has a wife to spend his days with.. What better candidate for the death penalty. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

My Maori mate would call anyone speaking English a foreigner.

Just saying.

Brian Lee ?  could be another of these fake westerners  who get farang citizenship so easily from our useless governments.. Is he Korean or kiwi?

If he can get hold of some of mummies money in Korea he should be able to post bail via a lawyer and do a disappearing act into Laos or Burma.

I'm pretty sure that "attacks on parents" do not come naturally to most human beings on the planet Earth.

and I would tell your "Maori" mate "katia to waha e hoa, rau ngati tamariki o aotearoa, ri te tonu i nianei". it means, we are all of this land, we are all people of this land anyway. I did not come here in a boat, I am of this land. My great grandfather did, he lost his wife on that boat, became the harbor master of Kaipara Harbour and was one of the first to take a Maori wife. I speak the language of the land, probably better than most Maori. And yes, my skin is white. But then again, skin is only skin, and when our lives end we return to the land that we were born from. I don't acknowledge racist attitudes. Just sayin.
