June 25, 20188 yr Prices of farm goods begin to rise BANGKOK, 25th June 2018 (NNT) - The government has instructed related agencies to help farmers cope with the present situation where the prices of certain types of farm goods remain low, while prices of many others have begun to increase. Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office Lt.Gen.Sansern Kaewkumnerd said today that some farmers have earnt improved incomes since prices of many crops started to rise. The price of unrefined jasmine rice has risen from 12,000 baht to 18,700 baht per ton, the highest in a decade, while regular rice is currently sold for an average of 8,000 baht per ton. The prices of cassava, corn feed and raw palm fruit have also increased to 3.2; 9.5 and 4.2 baht per kilogram respectively. The spokesperson said price increases can be attributed to the government’s decision to release stored rice from warehouses and silos, and secure new overseas markets for Thai farm products. He added that Thai exports during the first four months of this year rose by 11.5% year-on-year to 81.7 billion US dollars, the highest in seven years. Lt.Gen.Sansern said the government is confident that export growth will increase by 8% this year as anticipated. He mentioned as well that neighborhood shops have become a more popular choice for people looking for affordable goods via the government’s Blue Flag program. 11.4 million social welfare cardholders have significantly benefited from the program. -- nnt 2018-06-25
June 25, 20188 yr Popular Post The price of potatoes and onions have been expensive for quiet awhile,40 THB a Kg, the price of onions dropped to 16 THB Kg, but have risen again to 20 THB Kg,while potatoes are still 40 THB Kg. so the potato growers will be doing OK. It says that prices of rice have risen by 50 %,so the farmers should be happy ?,and not need subsidies ,but they say they still cannot make a profit,so it must be the rice exporters that are getting the cream. regards Worgeordie
June 25, 20188 yr How much of the price increase is due to the Baht depreciation rather than by junta efforts.

Complete lies and bullshIt. The only people who do Jasmine rice are the huge landowners in the central regions who manage two crops a year, everything is mechanized and they own 100's of rai of paddy each. And they earn good money. Meanwhile, the peasants with 10 rai per household, one crop a year are saying it's the worst prices in over a decade. I ain't a rice farmer, but the missus family have been for generations, and it's getting to the point where they are saying "what's the point".... Somebody is making a killing and it ain't the smallholder with callouses and a bad back...

I switched to sweet potato , 9B/kg if bought in 10 kg bag. Sticky hands though. Garlic wet from >100B to 45 .

More vitamines/fibre and less water . The taste is not as good but 9B against 30B (at the market) , works for me . The purple ones kept well for a week at room temp (27-28 C). White ones are ok too . The cheap onions are a bit watery , where ever I buy them , but can't complain when they cost < 20 B. The only prices that rise are fruit , not vegetables. (except now for pineapples).
June 25, 20188 yr Grow your own potatoes. Not as easy as back in the UK, but i have been successful 2 out of 3 times, just smaller crops. I have tried growing sweet potatoes in Thailand, but no luck. Either didn't grow or died later on. This year best results with tomatoes, sweet corn and okra. If not for back trouble, would have grown more.

Farm price of rice last season in parts of Ubon was 5.5 baht a kilo - basically the same price as production if contract labour is involved, as it so often is these days because of age, absentee children etc. If I had my way, the family would either rent out the land in return for some of the crop, or let it lie fallow for a year or 2. The net position wouldn't change.

It's better than a kick in the teeth, but it ain't nothing to write home about...

At the moment the family bears all the risk and has no ability to turn a living profit. They might as well be out of the farming loop since they have to be supported anyway. Cutting the losses is just as valuable at this point of the cycle. Edited June 27, 20188 yr by korkenzieher

All emerging markets depreciated against the USD. Money is flowing out of emerging market and parking in USD long bond in anticipation of more US rate hike. Commodities are quoted in USD and Baht depreciation inflate local prices. Exports are also benefitting and you can expect export value to be better which the junta will claim credit for not doing much.
