BANGKOK, 27th June 2018 (NNT) – The government has stepped up efforts to address informal debt problems in Thailand, as nearly 350,000 villagers have combined debts worth more than 20 billion baht.

The Defense Ministry Spokesman, Gen. Lt. Kongcheep Trantrawanich, said on Tuesday (June 26th) that the Defense Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, had instructed security agencies to quickly assess and seek solutions to the informal debt problems. The move is aimed at helping people, especially farmers, in accordance with the government policy.

According to a preliminary survey, there are 15,591 informal creditors and 345,023 debtors with a total debt of over 20 billion baht. Of that, 54,772 have already received assistance from the government.

Debt-ridden individuals and those owing money to creditors who are not members of the financial institutions or state agencies can request assistance from the government's Damrongtham complaints centers nationwide.

Anyone unable to settle debts will have their balance transferred to a state-run financial institution.

PM stresses solutions to informal debt

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to solve the public's informal debt issue, urging them to seek help and advice from the Government Savings Bank, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, or the Damrongtham Centers.

It looks like a year of inaction, now followed by a lack of decisiveness.
