And i liked all the trail bikes / dual sport bikes from the 70's to late 90's, up until 10-15 years ago where tons of transformer plastic, and water cooling took over. They had normal dashes, headlamps and were easy to work on. Reliable, light and fit for purpose. Prolly THE ideal bike for over here. Big fan of the Jap big singles, 400cc up. It aint OHC drive, as this motor has a very nice bevel drive on the timing side to the OHC cam box. 5 hours ago, Justgrazing said: Oh for sure it'll have a weighty flywheel .. The only other engine I can think of that bears comparison to it is the single cyl Lister diesel that is fitted in small Thwaites dumper truck's .. that has a flywheel weighing in at 20lbs .! is quite large and you know it when trying to start it with a starting handle .. On the other side the NSU when running will pull a house down I would imagine .. I have a KRT 140 Kubota tractor here, 750cc single diesel, electric and hand start, and our farm truck runs the same motor, albeit, all the electrics died years ago, so it's hand crank only. Great fun, about 14 hp, but as you say - torqua all the way up the side of a house. These motors have the external steel flywheel, (bacon slicer), electric start ones have the ring gear attached. About 2" thick and a good 18" across. Weigh a fair bit more than 20 kgs. You see these engines everywhere in the countryside, iron buffaloes - E Teks, modified farm vehicles - E tens, etc. The 14hp ones retail for around 40k TB. Gearbox extra. Pic below shows 14 hp can carry and pull along 1500 kgs... Sorry, back to the topic......

Just look at that blue & silver tank. Just look at the workmanship. Look at the bottom seams & details. Let alone the paint job design and gorgeous colours. Always loved that art deco period. Buildings, trains, cars, motorcycles, even machine tools of that period. Not art deco, but close - late 60's...

The town of Napier in NZ was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and totally rebuilt in the style of that time. No motorcycles here, but oozing art deco... Managed to find some bikes after all...

Yeah for sure Dr 650 was a good bike and an' excellent all rounder .. Not quite as bottom end torquey as XT600 but Suzy was smoother running especially at higher revs than Yam' .. an' also quite nickable as mine got tea-leafed like my XT600 .. Dr 350 was an excellent smaller capacity trailer and a very underrated bike as was XT350 .. Dr400 is a good 'un generally but liquid cooling added complexity a small'ish capacity trailer doesn't need especially off-road in the middle of nowhere .. Dr800 though I think took it too far and was too much of a water buffalo to get serious with off road weighing in at 189kg from what I recall .. Dr 650 ..

A recap for any guys who didn't see it last time 'round the engine is apparently the 2 front cylinders that were loped off a RR Merlin V12 .. Nah, it's not the same guy. The (slice of) Merlin powered bike was made by an Aussie fella, named Lucky Keizer. Looks like he's made a few mods to it from that photo above. Apparently he found the engine in a wrecked Mosquito bomber and was able to salvage two of the cylinders. He says it will do 400 km/hr. He's changed a bit since then too: Sounds like a good bloke, and not only because he's wearing a Triumph shirt: 'Lucky's love for motorbikes goes back to when he was 11 years old. "I had the mechanical inclination and need for speed back then and I got done for speeding in a baby's pram," he laughed. "I put a motor in it out of my father's cement mixer... I was so proud of it I had to take it down the highway near Dubbo in New South Wales. "I got fined five pound ten and it took about two years to pay it off." "I will go till the day I die I guess, but I plan to go way beyond 80 or 90; I will still be riding," he laughed.' http://www.abc.net.au/local/photos/2015/08/19/4296075.htm The 48 cylinder Whitelock Tinker Toy was built by an English bloke called Simon Whitelock.
February 26, 20197 yr Popular Post Whilst we're on off roaders, trail bikes or dual sports, here's a Ducati built before Ducati management had invented the "Scrambler" sub genre, based around an air cooled Monster. Not too shabby... Prolly great for hooning back roads here in TH.

February 26, 20197 yr While reading up on the Merlin, I found an even bigger V Twin. The 6.7L Gunbus, using 2 cylinders from a 9 cylinder radial aircraft engine. And aircraft tyres as well.
