Farmers register for compensation as cave water submerges rice fields

Over 40 farmers in Chiang Rai province on Wednesday registered with the authorities to receive initial compensation for their farmlands being flooded to aid in draining the floodwaters from the Tham Luang cave.

 

The 41 farmers of tambon Ban Dai of Mae Sai district saw 548 rai (88 hectares) rice fields affected gave permission for their farmland to be flooded. Along with fellow farmers in two other sub-districts, they agreed to the measure in order to help rescue the 13 trapped footballers.

 

Water drainage operations at the Tham Luang cave have already caused flooding in the low-lying areas.

 

According to an initial survey by local authorities, 101 farmers had so far been affected by the drainage operation with 8.39 per cent or 1,397 rai (240 hectares) of farmland in the three tambon of Mae Sai district already submerged.
