The number of rescuers inside the Tham Luang cave will be reduced due to fears of increasing carbon dioxide levels that could affect the trapped footballers and the workers, the mission head said on Saturday.

Phayao Governor Narongsak Osotanakorn told a press conference that excess staff had been withdrawn from inside the cave, leaving only necessary officials.

He said officials also tried to pump air into the cave to ensure that there would be enough oxygen for the rescuers and the trapped footballers.

He said the dwindling oxygen level, and increase in carbon dioxide from human exhalation, could be fatal to both rescuers and the trapped youths so the number of rescuers would have to be balanced.

Another explanation could be that everything is in place and they are setting as good an exit path as they can.

One can only hope.

Maybe right because all the people at Chamber 3 wouldn't effect the kids oxygen as there are water plugs (full water sections ) between them

Or that heavy rain is forecast, and they want to prevent any unnecessary personnel getting trapped.. Remember just a few days into the search (25th) they'd got almost as far as Pattaya Beach (I've seen 400m quoted), before the rains came and they were forced to retreat totally.  It then took a few more days to even get back into Chamber3.

Hopefully the pumping will helps but when it rains the water falling on the entire mountain will probably drain through and find its way down into the cave..

Safety to all those involved in the system with reference to air quality as only one factor is obviously of high concern to those in charge.

But, perhaps wishful thinking, as I said earlier perhaps they are also clearing an ex-fil path before an extraction attempt is made. Last thing the minders would need is people trying to pat them on the back or talk to them while they should be laser focused on what they need to do to get home.

Big speculation I know.

May the force be with them.

Indeed. The Force is strong with these ones.

As evidenced by their letters to loved ones that shared one common theme: "don't worry about us."

A display of pure courage despite their circumstances.
