Hi

I keep seeing a letter/ character in Thai writing that looks like 'taw thung' but has a longer tail .

I have found reference to it as 'reu' but can't find any reference to how it's used or if its a vowel or what

Anyone give me a clue or point me in the right direction to some info

Thanks

Yep, the symbol is , called รึ [HS]rue and functions as a consonant plus vowel combination, in some words pronounced รึ [HS]rue, in some words ริ [HS]ri and in some words as เรอ [ML]roe (not as English 'roe', but as 'rer' with no final /r/. It is not considered one of the 44 letters of the alphabet since it is not a simple consonant. In dictionary arrangements, however, it is placed after . (Quoted from Mary Haas's Student Dictionary).

It occurs in the words ฤกษ์ '[FL]roek' (เริก) meaning 'auspicious time', and also in the word ฤดู [HS]rue[ML]duu (รึดู) meaning 'season' and in ฤทธิ์ [HS]rid (ริด) 'supernatural power'; 'effect' as well as a few others.

Pilchard, Ä is treated as a vowel and is pronunced the same as ÃÖ.

An example of this would be Ä´Ù (ru-duu)

I hope that helps.

Garro, what Thai font are you using?

I cannot read it. I'm seeing A with 2 dots over the top and a U with an oblique

Hi Loong, I am using a Mac with a Thai keyboard and I changed the text code to THAI (Windows,Dos). It is coming up OK on my screen. I had a similar problem last week but the Thai text came out as ****** on the post. I am still getting used to the Mac. Any suggestions?
