A giant cassava root weighing 144 kilos has scooped the top prize at the Korat Tapioca Fair 2018, held at the Nakhon Ratchasima College of Agriculture and Technology.

The fair runs until July 13 and is hosted by Jaratchai Chokeruengsakul, Vice Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima.

The prize-winning root was the heaviest from a single tree and came from the tapioca farm of Narong Suwandee in Rangka Yai, Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima.

The fair, which is being attended by tapioca factory operators and cultivators from across the Northeast, is held to educate and introduce farmers to new agricultural technologies.

Nakhon Ratchasima is famous for its cassava-tapioca farms, which cover more than 31,900,000 rai in the province.

Thailand exports more than 7 million tapioca plants each year, fetching a healthy price of 3 baht per kilo.

Well done Narong Suwandee:

"Ooooh!, What a beauty! I've never seen one as big (or as strangely shaped) as that before"

With apologies to (and in remembrance of) Edrich Siebert, 1903 - 1984
