Good day,

I understand from the Royal Thai Embassy in South Africa that I can get a Multi Entry Non Immigrant Visa Category "O" (Thai Family).

The validity of this would be 1 year for multi entries not exceeding 90 days per visit. Question. This being so, can the 90 day visits be extended at all,  also are re-entry permits required for each visit?

Thank you

You can get a 60 day extension to visit your wife or child of each 90 day entry.

You can also apply for a one year extension of stay during the last 30 days of any 90 day entry. You would need 400k baht in a Thai bank in your name only for 2 months or proof of 40k baht.

A re-entry permit is not needed since the visa allows unlimited entries for a year from the date of issue.

Thanks Ubonjoe. If I wish to extend for 60 days after a 90 day visit do I also need to have 400 k in my Thai bank account. I realise for a one year extension I do.

No, not for 60 days extension.

Just to answer this part, not required, so long as you are on the one year non-O multiple entry visa, you can stay for 90 days per entry and each entry can be extended once for a further 60 days, so in theory you would have to leave Thailand every 150 days (or less if required), right up to the enter Thailand before date that is printed on your visa, after the last entry and the visa has expired, then you can either extend by one year or a further 60 days, if you wanted to leave Thailand and return during that period, you could get a reentry permit to keep that last permission to stay alive, if you had extended for only 60 days, the reentry permit would only be worth doing if you had enough days remaining on the permission to stay, i.e. more than say 90 days or so, otherwise you could just enter on a visa exempt entry for 30 days and extend that by a further 60 days, although a reentry permit would be 900 Baht cheaper.

Thanks Mattd. Just to clear something up for me. When you say "Leave Thailand" can I just go over the border, just before the allowed 90 days, to say Laos or Cambodia and then return on my multi entry visa. If so how long must I stay outside Thailand? Cheers.

You can do it at border crossing. You can depart Thailand, enter the other country and then turn around and come right back.
