UBON RATCHATHANI, 19 July 2018 (NNT) - Thai prisons are facing with the crisis of the ever increasing number of prison population to the point of ‘prison overcrowding’, which in turn, lead to various problems especially on the part of the quality of life of the inmates.

The Thai Health Promotion Foundation has thus provided the support to run the project, ‘Health Prison: Improving Quality of Life Behind the Wall’ in response to the government policy to keep all sector of population healthy physically and mentally. Healthy Prison is defined as the prison that provides the physical, social, and cultural environment to help promote a good quality of life for the inmates.

The Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison is one of the prisons which adopts the pilot development project to become a healthy prison with major objectives: to enable the inmates to have a good quality of life physically and mentally; to support and encourage the inmates, while they have to spend their time in prison, to gain positive experiences; to have creative power, inspiration and hope; to be able to realize their own values; to overcome the denouncement from society; and, to be ready to live a quality life when they are released from prison.

During the passing months the Healthy Prison Project has cooperated with the Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison to conduct various pilot activities to improve health and to develop creative power for the female inmates, such as yoga for holistic health, the utilization of color therapy, terrarium making, virgin zingiber pain-relief oil making, herbal balm making, and many other creative works.

One of the major problems for the inmates is the accessibility to the medical care service. Due to the shortage of officers, the prison has to be discrete in sending the sick inmates out to be treated at the hospital outside.

Therefore, the Healthy Prison Project and the Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison have then cooperated in conducting a pioneer project in providing the inmates with the opportunity to be able to access to the medical service by using the mobile health units.

The eye doctor and eye specialists were brought in to examine and treat the inmates who had eye troubles, which were the common diseases that the inmates, especially the senior ones are facing.

In addition, a mobile dental unit also brought in to provide dental services on site for the inmates, such as filling, extracting, impaction removal, denture, and decalcification

Yeah, I wonder what the original inmate population used for design capacity was and what that populatiin is now. I would imagine that the prisons have already been running at above design capacity rates for years or not decades.
