There were times where people did all sorts of unselfish acts just because it the right thing to do at that situation and at that moment in time, nobody calls them Heroes, mostly they got a big thank you and a slap on the back, nowadays, because of the apathy, egoistic and self centered attitude of the world's population in general, every act of benevolent, kindness and helping others with no ulterior motives are viewed as bravery and heroism, and this is doesn't say much for the world has become...

  • In reply to ezzra- it's the age we live in, the internet era of instant communication where every human act, good or bad, can be public news worldwide within minutes.  This has an obvious downsid

  • Naw, these guys would have been heroes at anytime in history.

Liz ought to be giving out at least a couple of knighthoods for these guys.

I miss the days when getting to be a knight meant you've pillaged infidel villages for decades or defended the island against viking invaders for months on end.

Or slew a pesky dragon and saved a damsel in distress,

But you are probably correct, a knighthood maybe over the top, but a decent recognision wouldn't go astray.

IMO, as non military people they should get the George Cross for their act of gallantry. I read at least one Lord has recommended this.

Plus, something from Thailand too.

Thailand -  seems they have been forgotten already after some sort of useless Fancy Card .

Yes - and that super-duper privilege card is only valid (as I understand it) for a mere five years. What a bloody insult to men who have risked their very lives to rescue those lads. And if there is no other type of card available - create one, in honour of this unique occasion.

Thought they didn't want publicity.

We're stuck with this cave story forever. Its taken on a life of its own.The media will assault us with never ending stories about the cave kids...

their first day at college

graduation day

their wedding day

their first born baby day with loving wife

the divers meet the mayor, meet the pope, meet  NASA astronaughts

divers going on lecture circuit

divers talking about how to be a good person,  how to be a good diver

how much they love their families....and on and on.

It will never stop.

Sheeple.

Do you have the "I can't be bothered to read this stuff" application on your computer?

I have something similar but mine requires looking at the headline and making a read/don't read decision. It works for me.

This example might prove rather more realistic:

I'd like to comment on lessons learned briefly. Unless i've missed something. After the initial finding of 13 alive boys, I remember both surprise/shock and deep concern to hear that none of them could swim. How could that be? Unless others have already posted on this, the answer is a total lack of a national programme, in Thai schools? Is the lesson not going to be learned? In (such) a crisis, a child needs that skill for his or her entire lifetime surely? How difficult or expensive can it be in a country famed for it's lovely weather and outdoor lifestyle? That a sporty group of young teen males had had no swimming lessons throughout their physical education schooling, reflects poorly on a country IMO. Please comment. This may've been discussed already elsewhere in which case apologies.

IMO it is not a case of a lack of a national program but more of a resource problem.Out here in rural Khampaeng Phet only 1 school out of the 3 my son went to from P1 to P6 had a pool.

The cost of equipping every school with a pool would be enormous. First you need the space to build a pool and equip it. It will then need cleaning every morning before use, it will need at least 3 full time fully qualified swimming teachers who are also trained as lifeguards/ medical emergency teams. It will need maintenance, topping up etc. In a school with over 1,000 pupils and an average 30 per class they may be lucky to get one hour a week swimming practice.

There are literally thousand of school in Thailand and probably 95% without a pool. Would you put rural village schools on the list as well.

Where I live in rural Khampaeng Phet the nearest swimming pool is 15 km away and costs 60 baht a day to use. Ironically it is less than 1 km from my son's school but it is only about 20 metres by 10 metres and quite shallow.

I do agree with your sentiments but TBH I would rather see an improvement in the teachers before this.

It has since emerged that most (maybe all) of the boys CAN swim; indeed, it seems that the Assistant Coach would on occasion take them out swimming. So where this irritatingly false (or is it?) story that they could not swim came from - God only knows. It is one of several seemingly misleading pieces of 'information' that we were fed while the whole crisis was ongoing ...

The fact remains that very few Thais can swim, as with many other Asian countries, which is why the fatalities are so high when there's a marine accident.

In some Thai cities, expatriate groups have been sponsoring swimming training for school children.

There is no national scheme for swimming as far as I know.

Internet... Social media... Celebrities! Raaaaaaah!!!!! :annoyed::bah::bah:

Thanks for putting some economic context to my post.

It's not as simple as i'd made out. Jobs would be created but not cheaply.

From Thailand, "Order of the Pink Elephant Second Class" would be appropriate ? Oh, with parachute wings of course!

Really?? Wow! What a shocking and surprising news item. In other news, "President Salutes Marines As He Boards AirForce 1", "Queen Rides Around In A Carriage". ?
