Hunt for man whose photo drove woman to suicide

A COURT on Thursday approved the arrest warrant for a former village headman after it was claimed he raped a woman and then posted a humiliating photo of the encounter on his Facebook page, driving her to suicide.

The suspect, identified as Noppadol Nawaariya from Tak’s Phop Phra district, was wanted for rape, which is punishable by a minimum prison sentence of three years. It was later reported that he would surrender to police in Lampang last night.

The 22-year-old Hmong woman drank pesticide on Saturday night and was rushed to Lampang Hospital in Muang district but died on Wednesday, after which her relatives decided to hold a funeral for her in Lampang’s Ngao district.

Atchariya Ruangratanapong, a lawyer and chairman of a Facebook group for assisting crime victims, on Thursday accompanied the victim’s twin sister to give key evidence to the case investigator, Muang Lampang deputy superintendent Pol Lt Colonel Seusakul Khunpherm.

The evidence, later identified as the photo of the victim and the suspect in the hotel room where the attack occurred, was reportedly included in the arrest warrant application.

Atchariya also said the accused man, a Tak-based former village headman had allegedly committed similar crimes before -– of raping and taking photos to blackmail other women in Tak and other northern provinces – but that none had filed a complaint before.

He said that many Hmong people assume |village headmen to be wealthy and influential people and the woman told him before she died that she had gone with the man fearing the consequences if she didn’t.

Her sister also revealed what she said in her suicide note: she apologised for embarrassing her parents and hoped to be born as her twin sister in her next life.

The sister urged the authorities to punish the former village headman, who claimed to be single and lured her sister to the hotel with the intent to rape her.

She also revealed that, while her sister was in a coma in hospital, the suspect added her on Facebook and sent messages asking about her sister's condition and offering to pay Bt30,000 a month in compensation. She says she turned down the offer because she didn't know who he was and was still in shock with what had happened to her twin.

Previous news reports had said the victim was raped by the former village headman and three of his friends but Atchariya has dismissed that as a misunderstanding, quoting the victim as having told him before her death that she was raped only by the former village headman.

The victim, whose parents and relatives live in Nan, lived with her husband in Lampang.

The alleged rape took place on July 14, after which she became visibly depressed and quieter than normal but didn't reveal what had happened.

It was only after her alleged rapist posted a photo of him lying next to her while she was unconscious in the hotel room that she told her parents about it.

She said she had been lured by a former village chief to the hotel to be raped and she was sorry for embarrassing the family.

The whole story is sickening, including this little nugget.

So at last, hopefully the Police are going to find and arrest

this guy, they tried to wriggle out of doing this before by

saying the victim had to report rape first, or instruct a relative

to do it, while knowing full well she was in a coma at the

time, now she has died and the story taken off they are

going to do something,no wonder the guy thought he

could get away with been a serial rapist.

take this POS out back and shoot him twice in the back of the head.

next case.

He is alleged to have committed similar rapes before, but none of the victims have ever come forward.

The victim, a young married woman, went with the head village man to a hotel fearing the consequences if she did not, because he is considered wealthy and powerful.

Something here does not compute. What consequences did she fear? Did she commit suicide because she was raped or was it because the deed was exposed on the social media? Considering she was a married woman.

I’m thinking the consequences were physical harm or even death.

As for which thing made her kill herself, I’m thinking all these factors compounded and it became too much.

I don’t know what answer you’re looking for. What difference would it make to anything?

Three years...things that make you want to castrate jerks like that.

A vile and repulsive person if ever there was.

In this case unfortunately 'moved forward to' is a bit more apt.

its not only rape but he is directly responsible for her death too.

Rapes do vary in severity and three years is quoted as a minimum. I know of a case where a man kidnapped and raped a woman and was given seven years inside.

A quick shooting is too good for people like him. What needs to be done to him and others like him is to shoot them in the knees so they have to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Sorry, but to me it is kind of evidence of incapacity, if a society need tens of thousand sub systems in rural villages because the main system fails, and those who run the show are not interested in taking care of all parts of the society. Btw. all village heads I am aware of, bought their position.

Former village headman accused of rape in Lampang

A former village headman accused of raping a 22-year-old Hmong woman and then posting a humiliating photo of the incident on Facebook – possibly triggering her suicide – was arrested in Tak on Friday morning.

Police searching the Phop Phra district home of Noppadol Nawa-ariya said he confirmed he was the man named in an arrest warrant issued by the Lampang Court the day before but denied the rape charge.

He claimed he was about to turn himself in to deny the allegation.

Atchariya Ruangratanapong, a lawyer for the dead woman’s family who runs a Facebook group that assists crime victims, broadcast Noppadol’s arrest via Facebook Live.

The alleged rape took place on July 14, after which the 22-year-old woman became depressed, though she would not say what happened.

It was only after the alleged rapist posted a photo of himself lying next to her while she was unconscious in a hotel room that she told her parents about it.

She said a former village chief had lured her to the hotel and she was sorry for embarrassing the family. On Saturday night the woman drank pesticide and was treated at Lampang Hospital, but she died on Wednesday.

Atchariya on Thursday accompanied the woman’s twin sister to give evidence to police, resulting in the arrest warrant for Noppadol.

The woman’s parents, preparing for the funeral in Lampang’s Ngao district, said they were relieved the suspect was already in custody and justice could run its course.

they need to seek all the previous rape victims and those sentences should run concurrently as well as murder charges or at least manslaughter.
