ubonjoe
After getting his Thai passport he will need to leave the country using his UK passport and re-enter the country using his Thai passport. It will have to be done by air since border crossings check for entry/departure stamps for the other other country when entering.

Joe, not questioning your answer as such, but how come those that obtain Thai citizenship by way of naturalisation (non PR route) are not required to fly out of the country in order to cancel their permission to stay on a foreign passport? Is there a difference?

Is there a difference? Because there is a procedure for them to cancel their current permit to stay or permanent residency. There is not one for a Thai national to clear their permit to stay after getting a Thai passport.
