SONGKHLA — Thai fishermen Wednesday called off plans for a strike after the government promised to consider revising some pending regulations.

A week after the National Fisheries Association in 22 provinces filed petitions against UN labor conventions and other recent industry regulations, a representative today said the strike was called off after provincial fishery presidents were invited to discuss their concerns with the Labor Ministry.

Can't go out to sea just now as the weather is too rough. Maybe they could use them to supplement the water pushers?

So threatening to hold their breathe till they turned blue did not work.

Wonder what they will try next?

I think they were just trolling trying to threaten the government with a shutdown of the fleet. The government must be inseine to sit down with these guys who are hooked on the old way fishing methods. They need to draw a line and say enough is enough. What a complete mesh.

The household money supply was running short and so was the matrimonial harmony and the benefits that came with it. Time to go back to work.

Go on strike why don't you?  Give the sea and the fish a break. I for one can do without your dubious spoils.

Yep.

I was actually thinking this could be good for the fish etc to get back to better levels of stock.

My home town if you order crab it's usually about 6 inches across the shell. Here you need a vernier gauge.

Can the guys from goal strike?

clever

if they want workers then they have to fix their slave like working conditions, who in their right mind would want to work for these idiots, workers have the right to offer their labour or with hold it when they do not like what they are being offered. These "captains" have to make it so the workers want to do the job, until they offer decent wages and conditions it will not happen. As for the regulations on how they fish that needs to be enforced to stop them stripping everything from the oceans, they have already decimated them, allowing them to continue doing it would be  beyond belief, their illegal capture methods etc need to be stopped permanently

"Thai fishermen Wednesday called off plans for a strike..."

It's difficult to bluff when you have an empty hand and your opponents are holding full houses. After weeks of explanation and counting on their fingers and toes a few hundred times, they finally understood that the few honest fishermen who are already complying with international standards, and didn't go out on strike, would be happy to haul in the extra fish that the strikers left behind, and making a lot more money.

Bummer

"Junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha on Tuesday said he could make no commitment as the main reason for the labor shortage is that workers don’t want to enter an industry notorious for imposing slave-like working conditions." (my italics)

I thought Prayut has told the world (and specifically the EU and USA) that these slave-like working conditions no longer exist. It's no wonder he can't commit that existence of slave-like working conditions is the main reason for the labor shortage. It's existence is clearly the main reason the shop operators want to use undocumented and stateless laborers - they're not protected by the constitution nor labor laws.

Rather than the Labor Ministry inviting the provincial fishery presidents to discuss their concerns, it should be along with the Justice Ministry inviting them to discuss the consequences of their plan to commit criminal acts. The government is otherwise showing it is committed to bypassing or bending the rule of law for the sake of politics, ie., favorable treatment before the national elections wherein Prayut wants to become the next elected PM.

Let the fish population recover.  Give them 6 months to get it together, if they don’t, take there boats out and offer them training for other work
