I had thought about going to Penang and getting a SETV there, but I am feeling lazy this weekend and am considering going by land to Ban Laem, Cambodia and back.

Does Cambodia still offer the 30 or 60 day paper SETVs, or do they just give stamps now? If they just do the stamps, I better not take my chances and I'll go to Penang.

You can't get "paper SETV's" at any land border, just 30 day visa exempt entry stamps. If you want a 60 day SETV you need to apply at the Thai embassy/consulate inside the country.

If you are going to do a 'visa run' (30 day vida exempt entry) you should avoid the Aranyaprathet/Poipet crossing to Cambodia.

If you apply for a SETV in Penang you will need a bank statement with at least the equivalent of 20K baht, and an onward flight booking. Vientiane, Laos is the easiest place to get a SETV as they don't require statements of flight bookings.

Great, thanks for the info. Don't know why I thought that Cambo offered the paper visas.

You can, of course, get an SETV in Cambodia if you go all the way to Phnom Penh to get it. It takes longer than in Penang or Vientiane.

Perhaps, what you were thinking of with "paper visas" at the Cambodian border is the visa on arrival that you get from Cambodian immigration just before entering Cambodia.
