I personally think that the locals are very unwise. I would never walk down a road without continually looking behind. Even when walking on a pavement I still frequently look behind, more so on a road like that.

 

Why wasn't he walking on the pavement ... not that it might have helped in this case.

 

On an aside I frequently see locals just step off the pavement without looking behind and even sometimes cross the road.

 

Okay in this case the above comments may not have worked anyway.

Asa daily walker I struggle with this every day, even walking against the traffic. Drivers here seem to have a lack of spatial awareness and tend to drive far further across the road than necessary. The lack of or poorly maintained sidewalks doesn't help either.

 

I was nearly hit by a motorbike yesterday which was clipping a blind corner far too sharply- just avoided injury by grabbing his mirror. All I got was a blank look. I will now start carrying a whistle for use if I hear bikes approaching me in my awkward areas.
